Top 5 Ways To Combat Anxiety And Worry

In the current climate the amount of people suffering from anxiety seems to have increased tenfold, and those who have experienced it before are struggling more than ever. Though there are occasions where medical intervention is needed, you don't always have to rely on medication or counselling to help you though a difficult time. There are a number of different methods you can try out to put yourself in a more peaceful mindset which will allow you to perform better and feel calmer and happier. Here are 5 ways i have found work best when anxiousness just wont shift:

    1. Fidget Toys:

These are gadgets that you can play and fidget with if you find you are someone who bites their nails, cracks their knuckles or simply cannot stop fidgeting when they feel anxious. There are so many options available from Popits, to fidget spinner, to clickers. Over time some of these have turned into children's toys to keep them occupied, but that just shows how good at distracting someone they can be. If you feel your hands need something to do then these would be a great option to consider. That being said, they can sometimes be noisy with buttons and clickers which might be the perfect distraction for you, but the worst distraction for others.

    2. Calming Activities:

I have personally found this one of the best way to keep myself calm if I'm nervous or worried about something. You could also consider these small hobbies you can pick up that don't involve anything stressful, strenuous or requiring commitment. Reading, colouring and sewing are just a few that I have found myself doing to keep calm. I also took up at home mani/pedi's during lockdown which I have come to find a great interest in as well as perfect distraction for anything I find troubling. Some situations require your undivided attention and so a distraction isn't always the best idea but anxiety doesn't discriminate when it comes to when it's time to strike.

    3. Meditating:

This has been something people did to lead a stress-free life since forever ago. You cant argue that being in a quiet space, breathing a steady breath and finding your centre isn't a good feeling and adding this to your weekly or even daily routine could be lifechanging. This is also something you can do with someone which can make your worrying time a little less lonely. Whatever it is that works for you is worth trying, be it in the morning to set your day right or the evening to destress and bring everything back down to earth.

    4. Natural remedies:

There are a few products out there that can have similar affects medication can have but from a completely natural source. In your local healthcare store you can probably find calming drops or chews that you consume and naturally your anxiety melts away. Some claim it's a placebo effect yet other swear they are the be all and end all. Either way they can't do you any harm and if they work then that presentation or job interview you have planned may not seem so scary anymore.

    5. Talk to someone:

This is probably the hardest yet most effective of all. Talking about something which seems insignificant to others yet colossal to yourself might seem next to impossible. Admitting your having trouble is hard but once you've decided to open up and get another perspective on the issue, you can change the way you view things and how you feel about them. This doesn't have to be a professional, but someone you trust or love so you know you will get the support you need. Shedding the load onto someone else doesn't mean your burdening them, but means you are working on improving yourself and getting in a better and brighter headspace.

    6. Anxiety affects us all one way or another and to varying degrees but there is something out there for everyone to help if you need it. Try a few things and see what brings you the most peace and happiness.
