A Definitive Ranking Of Every Character Who Says "Winter Is Coming"

But really...Winter is Coming.

Posted on

"Winter is coming" is probably the most quotable recurring line in Game of Thrones. It has been said many times, by many different characters. But who says it best?

11. Ramsay Snow*

HBO / Via dailyedge.ie

When Ramsay utters those three magical words, he does so as a conniving little monster, who is only tricking Theon into thinking he's safe. To put it simply, he doesn't deserve to say it.

10. Renly Baratheon

HBO / Via makeagif.com

The full quote he says is, "Winter may be coming, but I'm afraid the same cannot be said for my brother." He's self-indulgent when he says it. He's looking out for number one. And to him, that's not Ned Stark.

9. Benjen Stark

HBO

There's something special about a Stark saying "Winter is coming." While there's nothing wrong with the delivery, it doesn't have that Ned Stark spark.

8. Yoren

HBO

Again, there is nothing wrong with how this is said, it's just not incredibly special. With Benjen, Yoren is often another forgotten member of the Night's Watch. They are, after all, trained to watch out for winter.

7. Olenna Tyrell

HBO

Grandma Tyrell may be the most conniving little old lady is Westeros. She can do anything, including properly execute the most difficult phrase in the Seven Kingdoms. Bonus points for saying it with a knowing smirk.

6. Catelyn Stark

HBO

Catelyn knows what's up and isn't afraid to tell Renly that his men need Robb's. She utters the phrase with dominance and grace. Well done.

5. Maester Aemon Targaryen

He says it with wisdom and you have no choice but to believe him. As a man of the Night's Watch, it's practically his catchphrase (second to the Starks of course).

4. Arya Stark

HBO / Via imgflip.com

She's so young but she understands so much. When she first utters the phrase in Season 1, she understands that all is not right and she needs to prepare herself. She was a BAMF from the start.

3. Robb Stark

HBO / Via imgflip.com

When Robb says this, he's saying it with vengeance in mind. It's a fine example of a son emulating his father and you can't help but root for him.

2. Jon Snow

HBO

The moodiest and the broodiest of GOT characters and bastard son of Ned Stark is a frequent user of the Stark house motto.

1. Ned Stark, DUH

HBO

Ned Stark = Winter is coming

There's no doubt about it: Ned Stark is a boss, and every boss needs a sweet catchphrase. Uttered roughly 10000000 times by Ned in the 10 episodes he's alive for. He really knows how to leave a legacy.

RIP💔

Bonus: Richard Madden

Giphy

Even off camera, Robb Stark knows what's up.

Thanks for pointing out corrections! I hope I made them all.
