These New Posters For "Ready Player One" Pay Homage To Classic Movies And, Uh, People Have Lots Of Thoughts

Can you say "love 'em or hate 'em?"

Steven Spielberg's latest film Ready Player One — out March 29th — is set in the year 2045 and features characters who seriously love pop culture from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

So, in a nod to the characters' pop culture nostalgia, Warner Bros. released a series of posters that pay homage to some beloved classics:

They reimagined the iconic Blade Runner poster with the characters from Ready Player One.

And did the same with the unforgettable poster from Back to the Future...

Plus the posters from The Goonies...

    The Iron Giant...

    The Lost Boys...

    The Breakfast Club...

    The Matrix...

    Labyrinth...

    Risky Business...

    Rambo: First Blood Part 2

    Beetlejuice...

    And 1968's classic thriller Bullitt....

Reactions, shall we say, were mixed. Some people loved the posters and felt like they were in the spirit of the book:

Personally I love the Ready Player One posters. If you've read the book they make perfect sense from a marketing standpoint. #ReadyPlayerOne

I'm very baffled by the hate I'm seeing for the "Ready Player One" homage posters. I don't understand it? The movie itself has so many references and such, so how is this... different. Just me though. (Also for the record I LOVE The Labyrinth one, heh)

Ironic that the Stranger Things generation who absolutely loved and ate up those nostalgic overly referential posters are hating so hard on Ready Player One for doing essentially the same thing. And it’s Spielberg who INFLUENCED Stranger Things. You’re all idiots

I’m in love with these Ready Player One posters spoofing Blade Runner, The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, Matrix, etc. I need them in HD though https://t.co/4hpSW3NzHH

While others were a lot less generous:

these ready player one posters are causing me physical pain when will it stop

Ready Player One posters are like all the times you complained about Hollywood ruining movies you grew up watching with bad remakes wrapped up in one marketing PPT slide

The new Ready Player One poster campaign is really confident in the appeal of those hideous cgi avatars of the characters

The first person who defends these anti-imaginative Ready Player One posters with "everything is a remix" needs to get punched in the face with some sort of sword that's made out of lasers or something.

And then, of course, there were the (hilarious) yahoos who had to bust out the Photoshop:

all those READY PLAYER ONE posters are good, actually

Ok, this is the best Ready Player One poster. I can't wait to see how this movie.
