Polycarbonate Plastic From Discarded Compact Discs As An Alternative Material For Glass Of The Light Bulb

Compact discs are things which are commonly used. Most of it is used by employees, students and even children. They are very convenient in many ways. They are designed for us to store any information, data, documents and application so that we can bring and use it anywhere. Employees use compact discs so that they can store the project they had done which will be passed to their bosses. Game developers use compact discs to increase their market income. It is small, light and very convenient. Compact discs may be convenient but it has a short life span. It can last only for 5 up to 10 years. But, what do people do when the discs are unusable? They throw it which causes pollution that can cause diseases to people who are residing, floods and a lot more damages. Based on the British Plastics Federation, Polycarbonate is most commonly formed with the reaction of bis-phenol A (produced through the condensation of phenol with acetone under acidic conditions) with carbonyl chloride in an interfacial process. PC falls into the polyester family of plastics. Polycarbonate remains one of the fastest growing engineering plastics as new applications are defined; global demand for PC exceeds 1.5 million tons. Polycarbonate is a durable material. Although it has high impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance. Polycarbonate is stronger and will hold up longer to extreme temperature as compared to other plastics. Polycarbonate is highly transparent to visible light, with better light transmission than many kinds of glass. Polycarbonate plastics are very useful to mankind. According to the Polymer Technology and Services, Polycarbonate is naturally transparent, with the ability to transmit light nearly that of glass. It has high strength, toughness, heat resistance, and excellent dimensional and color stability. Flame retardants can be added to polycarbonate without significant loss of properties. Light bulbs are mostly made with glass as outer covering for it. In case of disasters, sometimes light bulbs fell into the ground and it will break leading to accidents and sometimes death. Based on our conclusion, polycarbonates are very hard to break because it is bullet-resistant, heat-resistant and flame-retardant. By using polycarbonate material than glass it will be unbreakable due to its strength and it will not be flammable due to its properties.

Polycarbonate plastics that are found in CD's have many properties like flame-retardant, hard to break, bullet resistant and transparent. Almost 6% of the world's garbage is made up of discarded CD's from all over the world. The researcher wants to recycle this cd's and use it in another way that can help us to be safe in times of disaster. Those characteristics of polycarbonate were applied in the light bulb. In case of earthquakes, many light bulbs fall from the ceiling due to that shaking of the ground resulting into accidents. This light bulb will be safe for everybody in all times because it is very durable and it is a good alternative material as the glass of the light bulb. Light can still pass through even if the outer covering of the light bulb is made up of polycarbonate. In case your house is in fire, light bulbs with polycarbonate glass will not be harmful because it is not breakable and it will not harm your physical body. Polycarbonate was applied as glass of the light bulb wherein it will not break in case it falls. Drop test was conducted in different height to determine the strength capacity of the light bulb. Survey test is done by the researcher to know the general acceptability of the light bulb with polycarbonate.
