Can You Tell If These Drawings Were Made Digitally Or Traditionally?

"I spent a semester in Florence, and when I was trying to think of a landscape, this was the first thing that came to mind. The clouds are pretty cool – one of my favourite parts of the painting. This is my first Surface painting. I drew it and then painted over it a couple times."

Digital

“I don’t really use [blue pens] that often. Honestly, it was while I was working, and I needed to get a pen from the supply closet, and they were out of black pens. But there’s something really nice about using ballpoint pens. It gives you a really different texture."

Traditional

"I had finished the painting without the hamster, and I thought it looked boring, so I put the hamster in. It definitely made it way less serious as a painting. I kinda sought out to just paint what I saw, but then it started looking a little cartoony, so then I just went with that."

"This is a portrait of my boss when he was 12 years old. Look at that smirk – more of a scowl. And the necklace? It’s a middle school thing. I think I wore a necklace in middle school too. Probably for like a week I just had one random chain that I found. But yeah, I was really inspired by this."

"It's my co-worker's dog. I was showing someone how the Surface worked – on that painting – and I thought I was going to erase [the white splotches] right afterwards, but I looked at them and thought, _this looks kinda cool_. I mean, we can say it's paint on a fence – that's not a bad idea."

"I don't really know anything about water towers. Do people use them anymore? I don't know. They definitely look cool, so I just thought I'd draw it."

"I really love animals wearing hats. It’s like my favourite thing. I made an alphabet book of animals all wearing hats. I don’t know. Animals can wear hats too. I don’t see why not. I just think they look kinda funny with hats on. Especially a frog."

“I really like bears. I think they’re cool. This is my favorite of the Surface drawings. It felt the most like an actual pencil sketch while I was working on it. I think it was able to capture the way I sketch and my style the best."

"That's my plant. I think plants naturally lend themselves to be painted with watercolour because of the little 'happy accidents' that happen — it makes it look like what actually happens in nature."

"You know, they always say, 'Show, don't tell,' but I like to do both. A lot of illustrators and designers like comic artists use [text] like a fun, little toy. It's fun to label things, even though it's really obvious. Yeah, obviously it's a truck."
