We Tasted The New Starbucks Summer Drinks And Here's What We Thought

They're permanent additions to the menu.

Summertime PSA: Starbucks just added two new options to their menu to help you escape the heat: a Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew and an Iced Vanilla Bean Coconutmilk Latte.

They're available at Starbucks stores nationwide starting tomorrow, July 10. The Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew will retail for $3.95 for a Grande, and the Iced Vanilla Bean Coconutmilk Latte will retail for $4.95 for a Grande. (Though pricing may vary by location.)

We decided to taste test both of them to see if they were worth the hype. Here are our thoughts!

First: the Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew. Here's what it looked like:

The salted cream cold foam had the texture of whipped cream, but was slightly richer and velvetier. People have been getting really into the cold foam thing since Starbucks introduced it earlier this summer, so it's no surprise that they're coming up with a new version of the drink.

TBH, it tasted like a caffeinated butterbeer. We were into it.

Vaughn: This is like the Frappuccino’s sophisticated uncle who makes frequent trips to Tuscany and always comes back to America with a new “thing.” The salted cream hit me on my first sip, and paired nicely with the intensity of the cold brew. It usurped my taste buds at first, but as I kept drinking, it made for a super smooth experience. As an adult, I'd feel much more socially acceptable ordering this in lieu of a Frappuccino.

Michelle: The genius of this drink is in the strawless sipping lid, which basically lets you sip a 50/50 ratio of both cold brew and salted cream in every mouthful. The cold brew tasted pretty watered down in my opinion, but I loved the salted cream, which was moderately thick and tasty. The one huge caveat? I'm lactose-sensitive so I'll NEVER order this. HMU when you release a dairy-free option though, Starbucks!

Next: the Iced Vanilla Bean Coconutmilk Latte. It looked like your standard iced latte:

It's made with vanilla bean and coconut milk, and shots of espresso poured on top. And FYI, while the beverage is made with dairy-free milk, it is not certified vegan.

...But definitely tasted less sweet and somewhat more diluted.

Vaughn: The vanilla bean flavor was kind of impressive. Although this is apparently made with no syrup, my first sip was 100% sweetness (maybe from the vanilla that had settled to the bottom?) As a black coffee drinker, I wish this had a stronger coffee flavor. I only got coffee notes as an aftertaste. Generally, this is a verrrrry good latte alternative for someone who isn’t looking to spend the rest of the day making bathroom trips or crashing from a sugar high.

Michelle: Yes! I love that they finally came out with a sweetness option that's somewhere between plain iced tea and overly-sweet Frappuccinos. It tastes kind of watered down, but honestly I prefer this to their other iced latte options (which are too sweet) or iced coffees (which are too caffeinated). Would order 10/10.

TL;DR: The Salted Cream Cold Foam Cold Brew is smooth and has a butterscotch-like taste, while the Iced Vanilla Bean Coconutmilk Latte is a milder alternative to Starbucks' more intense iced coffees or frapps.
