1. Do you pre-poo? Me too. View this video on YouTube youtube.com Most people think natural girls just woke up like dis. In fact, we did not. To get these soft, well-moisturized, voluptuous curls, we have to make sure our tresses stay thoroughly hydrated. That's where the pre-poo -- or deep conditioning treatment before shampooing -- comes in. 2. Wash Day. A whole post could be written about Wash Day when you're natural. Wash Day separates the girls from the women, the weak from the strong. First, there's the washing. Then the conditioning. Then the sectioning. Then the detangling. Then the reshaping of the curls using a Denman brush. And because you separated your hair into 8 parts, you have to do half of that 7 more times, before rinsing out the conditioner. 3. Oil it up! After washing, conditioning, and detangling, it's time to thoroughly moisturize your hair with your leave-ins, butters, milks, and oils. If you haven't used up a quarter of your jar of coconut oil and Shea Moisture products, you're doing it wrong. 4. Protective Styling: Twists and Braids and Buns, oh my! View this photo on Instagram instagram.com Protective styling has saved many a naturalista from having tangled, ashy-looking hair. A wash-n-go is all cute, fun, and games until you have to get those fairy knots out. 5. Wrap it, wrap it up before you go to bed though! Picasa Whether it's by rocking a satin scarf, satin bonnet, or satin pillow—natural regal tresses deserve better than to rest against the basic-ness of a cotton pillowcase. 6. You make me wanna Twist-Out and Shout! Ahh, the twist-out… No part of the natural hair cycle makes you feel as flawless as the twist-out. A Black girl on the first day of her twist-out plans to stunt on EVERYBODY. 7. The Bun Days View this photo on Instagram instagram.com A twist-out usually doesn't last more than a few days, even with diligent and disciplined nightly wrapping (see #5). After about 3 days, it's time to retire an old twist-out into a bun. But y'all know the old proverb: The higher the bun, the closer to God. 8. Back to square one again… Most naturalistas have to maintain their hair on a weekly basis, with some daily upkeep. (We ain't forget about you, water spritz bottle and Eco Styler Gel!) By Day #7 or #8, it's time to break out your coconut and jojoba oils and deep conditioning mask… The time for pre-poo has come again.
