Ranking The Best And Worst Dramatic Makeovers In "Top Model" History

Tyra Banks may be a legendary supermodel, but some of her makeover advice has been questionable.

Posted on

23. Nicole Linkletter — Cycle 5

The CW

There are definitely times when Tyra and her producers get it right with the look they want to give a contestant, and they certainly knocked it out of the park with Nicole's makeover. Her makeover took her from looking like an average girl in the mall to someone you could see walking among Heidi, Giselle, and other top models in their heyday.

22. Kari Calhoun — Cycle 21

The CW

Kari was a contestant on the most recent iteration of Top Model. What's unique about this makeover is that it was completely unexpected. Sometimes you can assume that Tyra is just going to dye a girls hair darker or cut it a little shorter, but she did the opposite with Kari. She was given length and she went icy blonde. Who wouldn't want an ice queen like her to haunt your dreams?

21. Amanda Swafford — Cycle 3

UPN

Although she didn't win her cycle, Amanda will always be a Top Model fan favorite. Her transformation from brown-haired beauty to a blonde-haired ethereal-looking angel gave her an edge the other models in her cycle didn't have: The blonde made her blue eyes pop even more, resulting in a fantastic makeover.

20. Jaslene Gonzalez — Cycle 8

The CW

"I can give you neck. What do you want neck?" Jaslene's personality was infectious and her look was already dynamite, but the judges gave her some length and waves to get the her look completely matched her charm.

19. Shandi Sullivan — Cycle 2

Shandi definitely had one of the most dramatic makeovers on the show. The former Walgreens employee was very drab, but Tyra came to the rescue to get Shandi's look runway ready.

18. Heather Blumberg — Cycle 2

Heather's makeover remains one of the worst because the judges didn't even try with her. All they did was straighten her hair. That's it. C'mon, you could've done better than that, TyTy.

17. Julie Titus — Cycle 3

UPN

Like Heather in Cycle 2, Julie was the victim of a "non-makeover." Literally nothing was done to her. I mean, her hair was straightened, but does that really count?

16. Bianca Golden — Cycle 9

Bianca was supposed to have her hair dyed when makeovers were announced, but when it was discovered that her hair was severely damaged, the judges decided that it was best to shave her bald. She was forced to wear wigs for the rest of the cycle.

15. Phil Sullivan — Cycle 20

The CW

This is almost as bad as Denzel's lace front beard. Almost. Tyra decided to give Phil a more rugged look, but the end result was just another white dude who looked like he was trying too hard to be Jesus. ~So high-fashion~

14. Saliesha Stowers — Cycle 9

The CW

Stowers is probably one of the most hated winners of Top Model, mainly because people believe Tyra rigged her cycle, ensuring that she'd win. Her makeover is one of the worst in the show's history because even a bob failed to make her high-fashion.

13. Elina Ivanova — Cycle 11

The CW

The thing about Elina's makeover is that it made her look less modelesque. She was one of the few contestants who looked fine without a makeover. But Tyra thought she'd pop a bit more with red hair, but instead of making her burn bright it kind of dulled her shine.

12. Jade Cole — Cycle 6

The CW

Jade was the undisputed star of Cycle 6 of ANTM. She stood out for all the wrong reasons, and one of those reasons was her makeover. While the cut is fine, I think Tyra went too far by giving her blonde hair as well.

11. Ann Markley — Cycle 3

UPN

Ann's makeover kind of made her look like Rogue from the X-Men comics, which you could take as a compliment...if we were talking about superheroes and not models.

10. Cassandra Jean — Cycle 5

The CW

Cassandra was the girl whose hair was supposed to look like Mia Farrow's in Rosemary's Baby. The stylist botched her hair the first time, and then Tyra wanted them to fix it by taking even more hair off. Major fail.

9. Jaeda Young — Cycle 7

The CW

Jada's features are striking, but I believe this is one time that a short pixie cut actually worked against the model. There's also the fact that she never really mastered how to adapt to her new look, which ultimately resulted in her being eliminated.

8. Marvita Washington — Cycle 10

The CW

This is another makeover where I feel like you lose the model. It looks as though Marvita is auditioning to be a fighter in Mortal Kombat rather than vying for top model. Um, OK.

7. Megg Morales — Cycle 7

The CW

Megg was a great model. Very down-to-earth, but what held her back is that she didn't know how special her look was — that and the fact that the judges deemed it appropriate to give her a headful of weave that basically made her look like Cousin Itt.

6. Wendy Wiltz — Cycle 6

The CW

For Wendy's new look, Tyra and the other judges decided to go for "urban glam," but, like, no. Wendy's look worked against her because her look was already very ordinary and then the judges gave her a hairdo that literally anyone in America could rock. Not cool.

5. Stacy-Ann Fequiere — Cycle 10

The CW

Stacy-Ann's makeover seemed to be one of the least inspired in the history of ANTM. This is the one time that a cute bob would've made a contestant high-fashion. Why the buzz cut, Tyra?! Why?!

4. Brittany Hatch — Cycle 8

The CW

Brittany was a bit of a whiner, but she took amazing photos — while having to deal with the weave from hell! It was knotted underneath, but she managed to make it very far in the competition despite the look Tyra gave her.

3. Whitney Thompson — Cycle 10

The CW

Whitney may be the second-most hated winner after Saliesha. She was the first full-figured model to win, even though many would agree that Anya deserved the title. Anyway, Whitney's makeover was sort of...terrible. Blonde didn't really fit her, and the uneven cut didn't help either. Another beautiful woman who fell victim to a horrendous makeover.

2. Molly O'Connell — Cycle 16

In Cycle 16 Molly was given a weave and the producers brought in a "weave specialist" to do her hair. As it turns out, the stylist completely butchered Molly's hair and she had to get it done again after she took her promotional photo.

1. Denzel Wells — Cycle 21

Surprisingly, this was a first in Top Model history. Tyra deemed it appropriate to give Denzel a lace front beard, but it looks so, so bad. Denzel somehow managed to make it work, though.
