We've all heard and come to expect certain things about college. These ideas usually come from extreme exaggeration and glorification shown on movies and television shows. Today, these myths will be clarified and corrected.

1. Crazy Parties

While small parties may occur among college students, nothing as crazy as this will happen without jeopardizing your college inclusion. Probation, expulsion, and legal troubles may result in parties like this that include illegal substance abuse and illegal behaviors. Alas, you will be sadly disappointed if you apply to college solely for the parties.

2. The Ramen Diet

Many students come to college expecting to be broke and forced to survive off of Ramen noodles. This however is untrue. With careful budgeting, students might even be able to afford quality meats and vegetables.

3. Excessively Strenuous and Stressful Curriculum

Students entering college for the first time are often concerned that the workload may be unbearable, or that they aren't smart enough to succeed in college. This is completely untrue. The work assigned in college is completely do-able. All it takes is a little dedication; you need to read assigned materials, and take the time to complete your task.

4. Greek Life Rules the School

Because of what is seen in the media (on movies and such) people who haven't experienced college life are led to believe that sororities and fraternities rule the school. This being said, greek students simply get more involved in college activities and community services. These groups are of students are essentially just students who join a club, and form close ties with fellow club members.

5. Hazing

Hazing is a ritual practice performed on newcomers to a group. This usually consists of abuse, humiliation, and harassment. These practices have become more and more frowned upon. College administrations don't stand for such violent and vulgar behaviors. While there may be a ceremony for newcomers, it has become significantly more safe and humiliation free.

6. College is Too Expensive

Many people are nervous or skeptical in applying for college because they don't have the finances needed to attend college, or because college is too expensive. While they might be right about the high tuition costs, there are also thousands of grants and scholarships available to students from any background. With a decent paying part time job, a couple of grants and scholarships, a loan if needed, and even the help of federal financial aid, anybody can afford college.

When a student enters college for the first time, they expect to face a weight gain by the end of their freshmen year. This is because students, being away from home for the first time, don't prepare the healthiest of meals for themselves.

8. You're in it Alone

One of the fears students have before going into college is that they're gonna have to take on the challenging new materials on their own. The opposite is true, however. Putting your head together with other students to take on assignments in college is encouraged. In some courses, a group effort is the only way to survive. At the same time, there are also several resources outside of class. There are usually tutorial sessions for any given course, and postings of tutors available for hire around the school.

9. Late Night Study Sessions

A common misconception for students is that you will experience many late night study sessions to keep up with your assignments. A student shouldn't have to study into the wee hours of the night unless they've been procrastinating with their assignments.

10. I Don't Have to Go to Class to do Well

The majority of college classes don't take attendance. After years of grade school where attendance is checked every few hours, students make the choice to not attend class because it won't hurt them or their grades. While not attending may not literally count against you, you could be missing vital material that was covered in the day's session. Students who attend all their classes and pay attention to the lessons typically get better grades!
