The Self-Mummified Monks of Japan

Scattered throughout Northern Japan are two dozen mummified Japanese monks known as Sokushinbutsu. As a part of the self-mummification process, they ate a diet consisting only of tree bark and roots, took part in rigorous physical activity and would regularly consume poisonous tea. I'm pretty sure the Buddha would have given them a bloody great bitch slapping for doing this. (Via)
