It's a deep rooted instinct from being natural hunters, they don't hunt near their water source, which carries over to food near water = bad. Feel free to look it up!

Cats don't like having their water near their food (or litter), and they really enjoy running water Also, plastic is possibly the worst material for their food and water dishes

Inversely, older cats can adopt behaviors from younger ones too! When I got my kitten he decided that being inside of the couch is a great place to be. Shortly after, my little senior gal decided that was an awesome idea and started doing it too 🤦🏼‍♀️
