After weeks of training, today is your first solo shift as a server. During lineup, while the manager is talking to everyone, you notice your shoes are untied. The best course of action is...

Kneeling slowly, you do the whole bunny-goes-around-the-tree until your knots are perfect.  As you rise, you realize your apron got caught under the shoe, and you looped the apron strings through your belt holes.  Not only do you fall over, your pants get pulled down too. Quick! Get up! It's time to greet your first table!

Your apron got caught!

Three steps was all it took for you to remember about those pesky laces.  The problem is, you remembered on your way to meet the floor.  Pick yourself up and get ready to greet your first table!

You forgot!

You keep running through the daily specials in your head, ready to shine.  The table is not giving you an opening to approach so you...

In an effort to get all the words out, you mangled most of it.  The only thing they heard was you offering "Chicken Lizard Pate" and a "Spinach Pop-Off," instead of liver pate and a pop-over.  They need a few minutes to decide.

You spoke too fast!

They sound very intrigued by the specials, so much so that they have you repeat them eight times. They need a few minutes to decide.  (They won't end up ordering the special fyi.)

They need you to repeat that!

The Chef needs a favor. "Can you bring sheet trays of oven-roasted tomatoes to the back?" they ask.  Being new and eager...

Testing the metal, you find the trays to be cool.  Knowing you need to get back to your section, you rush to the prep kitchen, only to find two more trays that need to go.  Without thinking, you grab these with your bare hands and your skin sticks to the metal a bit. Muffled screams and some burn gel later, you get back to the shift!

You were lulled into thinking this was safe!

The first trip is easy as the trays were already cool. Two new trays are ready for transport, although these are hot!  Halfway to prep, the heat gets through the wet towel, burning your fingers and causing you to drop them on the ground.  The Chef is not pleased, but you have to get back to your station!

Never grab anything hot with a wet towel!

A table on the patio needs drinks, and you agree to bring them out. The front exit is packed, but there is a side way to get outside... 

No amount of excuse me's is enough as you try to weave through the crowd.  Someone giving directions doesn't see you and while telling their friend to go down the street, they hit you in the eye. You manage to keep the tray balanced and pull a matrix back bend while recovering. Back to work!

There's too many people!

Before you can even get out the side door, someone knocks into you, sending the tray of drinks flying. Round 2, you get down a small alley then trip on your way up the stairs to the patio, sending pink lemonade flying. Third time's the charm. Back to work!

Your table is ready to order.  You write everything down and repeat it back to them.

Backing up, you bump into the kind woman who trained you last week.  She had a tray of tall beer glasses, which now tumbles, giving a baby their first taste of hops. The only person still smiling at you is the baby. Back to it!

You moved too slow!

Haste makes waste (and head wounds). You abruptly turn around and impale your forehead on an ornate light attached to a booth.  A quick trip to the manager's office for a bandage, and you're back at it! (Also, no sympathy tips come from that.)

You moved too fast!

A coworker is brewing hot coffee to put in the fridge to make it iced.  They're struggling with an overly full plastic container, trying to place it up high.

They drop the container as you slowly back up. Your shoes say "slip resistant" but not slip proof. The normally comforting scent of coffee now assaults you as you're lie in a puddle of wake-up juice. Luckily, you have a second uniform waiting in your locker!

You walked away... but you should've run!

While lifting the plastic container, you ponder why they use plastic for hot beverages.  The answer is they shouldn't!  The container collapses inward, spilling scalding wake-up juice all over you. You keep a spare uniform in your locker for such occasions!

Whelp, that was an obvious turn of events!

Dessert order time!  You're bringing out some coffees and waters to your last table. Someone decides it's a brilliant idea to take a drink off your tray, throwing the whole balance off...

The tray tumbles, ceramic shatters, and a single glass of water drenches a tiny old lady.  Turns out, she had just gotten a perm! You watch in horror as her hair dissolves like cotton candy in a rainstorm. Sidework time!

Things can always be worse!

The tray begins shifting toward the table. Thinking fast, you aim it back towards yourself. A second dose of scalding liquid runs down your pants and into those worthless slip resistant shoes. (Seriously though, they work on snow and that's worth something.)  Sidework time!

Well, now you've had enough coffee!

You need to get ranch dressing down from the top shelf to finish your sidework, but you can't reach. What do you do?

Oh no! That tall friend just tried to knock the ranch your way but missed. Instead, an orange curry sauce came raining down! Don't worry, your buddy jumped out of the way. However, you had your brand new white work shirt dyed orange, along with the rest of your body. The train ride home will be awkward.

No one can help you now!

After delicately placing the ladder against the shelf, you climb it slowly. A small wobble soon turned into a large sway as the ladder tipped over (and you along with it).  Luckily, the floor was so cold, it worked like an ice pack on your throbbing arm!

While cashing out, you think back. How did your life become this nightmare? It all started...

A crisp winter day, you bounce on a bed as a gentle snow fall blankets the area. A sled has been placed in your room. Why? You're too young to care. You keep bouncing higher and higher. Whoever put the sled there left the blades facing out... You get the idea. Snap back to reality – it's time to go home!

Who leaves a sled there?!

Orange? 16-year-old you stares into the mirror after rinsing the bleach from your hair.  Orange. The box shows a blonde. This should not have happened. It's like looking right at a neon EXIT sign. ORANGE?!?! Snap back to reality – it's time to go home!

Why you should always read the instructions!

You're finally home!  Your partner asks how the first day went...

You get a kiss on the forehead as they pull out the always-packed-and-ready first aid kit. Another shift is waiting tomorrow, but tonight you can rest. They know who you are and accept the klutz within. You may fall all the time, but they fell for you!
