Who are the Isurumuniya lovers?

The carving of the lovers found on the rock was believed to be that of King Dutugamunu’s son and the low caste maiden that he loved. The carving is known to originate from the 6th century.

What’s their story?

It is believed that Prince Saliya fell in love with a lowly beautiful maiden; Asokamala. The prince obviously refused to marry anyone besides her, so the furious King banished the couple from the kingdom.

The temple

The temple was built on a rock by King Devaampiyatissa as a monastery for 500 ordained children. The stupa at the temple was built recently and the temple is connected to a cave.
