The Top 10 Apocalyptic Songs

We may have made it this far in 2012, but it’s probably all coming to an end soon. Inspired by the horrific events in Mass Effect 3, we created this playlist to help you get excited about and get through the apocalypse.

In Mass Effect 3, you will have to fight not just for your own survival, but for the survival of the planet Earth. These songs are among the most essential for any apocalyptic playlist. And certainly you can’t afford to make any mistakes in such a dire situation as this.

1. “The Man Comes Around,” by Johnny Cash

Important verses:
And I heard, as it were,
The noise of thunder:
One of the four beasts saying: “Come and see.”
And I saw. And behold, a white horse
There’s a man goin’ ‘round takin’ names
An’ he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won’t be treated all the same
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the man comes around.

2. “Earth Died Screaming,” by Tom Waits

Important verses:
There was thunder,
There was lightning,
Then the stars went out
And the moon fell from the sky,
It rained mackerel,
It rained trout
And the great day of wrath has come,
And here’s mud in your big red eye
And the poker’s in the fire and the locusts take the sky

Well, the earth died screaming
While I lay dreaming.

3. “Idioteque,” by Radiohead

Important verses:
Ice age coming, ice age coming
Let me hear both sides
Let me hear both sides
Let me hear both…

Ice age coming, ice age coming
Throw me in the fire
Throw me in the fire
Throw me in the…

We’re not scaremongering
This is really happening, happening
We’re not scaremongering
This is really happening, happening

4. “The End,” by The Doors

Important verses:
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end.

5. “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” by Blue Oyster Cult

Important verses:
All our times have come
Here but now they’re gone
Seasons don’t fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain,
We can be like they are.

6. “It’s the End of the World As We Know It,” by R.E.M.

Important verses:
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it’ll do
Save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed

Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right (right)
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

7. “Blackened,” by Metallica

Important verses:
Planet dies
Darkest color
Blistered earth
True death of life

Human race expectation

Lay to waste
See our mother
Put to death
See our mother die

Smoldering decay
Take your breath away
Millions of our years
In minutes disappears

8. “London Calling,” by The Clash

Important verses:
The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
London is drowning-and I live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, an’ go it alone
London calling upon the zombies of death
Quit holding out-and draw another breath

9. “Nothing But Flowers,” by The Talking Heads

Important verses:
This was a Pizza Hut
Now it’s all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it’s turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don’t leave me stranded here
I can’t get used to this lifestyle.

10. “Bad Moon Rising,” by CCR

Important verses:
I see the bad moon arisin’
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin’
I see bad times today

Don’t go around tonight
Well, it’s bound to take your life
There’s a bad moon on the rise

I hear hurricanes ablowin’
I know the end is comin’ soon
I fear rivers overflowin’
I hear the voice of rage and ruin
