These 16 Behind-The-Scenes Facts Will Change The Way You Look At Your Fave LGBTQ+ Movies

There's more overlap between Mad Max: Fury Road and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert than you may think.

1. Jennifer Garner's "exhale" speech in Love, Simon wasn't in the original script, but it was added after Garner told director Greg Berlanti, "I want to connect with my son in the last act."

2. When Call Me By Your Name was screened at the New York Film Festival in 2017, it received a 10-minute standing ovation, "the longest recorded in the festival's 55 years."

3. But I'm a Cheerleader was originally given an NC-17 rating, and to get it rated R instead, Jamie Babbit had to shorten a masturbation scene and cut the line "Did you go down on Megan?"

4. The "visual language" of Carol was inspired by '50s street photography, and in particular the work of Saul Leiter, Ruth Orkin, and Vivian Maier. This was done both to capture the truth of post-war New York City and to thematically tie into Therese's role as a photographer who is "uncomfortable taking pictures of people."

5. The post-apocalyptic vehicles of Mad Max: Fury Road and the legendary tour bus central to The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert were designed by the same person: Colin Gibson, who collaborated with Owen Paterson on the "recycled school bus’s iconic look."

6. Speaking of Priscilla, costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner wanted to make a gown out of credit cards, but all the major banks declined to have theirs featured. They made the outfit out of flip-flops purchased from a K-Mart instead, and when the movie won an Oscar for best costume design, Gardiner attended the ceremony wearing a dress constructed from 254 American Express cards.

7. Moonlight was filmed over the course of 25 days, and the three actors who portrayed Chiron at different stages in his life never interacted or watched each other's footage.

8. Park Chan-wook, director of The Handmaiden, always encourages the casts of his films to share meals with him and socialize outside of work so that they can "become good friends."

9. After eating dog shit on camera for Pink Flamingos, Divine got worried about side effects and called the hospital. Imitating his mother, he told a nurse that his son had just eaten "dog doody." The nurse said that the "son" would be just fine, though she recommended watching out for symptoms of worms (and getting rid of the dog).

10. Radium Cheung, the director of photography on Tangerine, said that one of the best parts of filming the movie entirely on iPhones was the fact that passersby didn't stop and bother them the same way they would have if they'd been filming with more traditional equipment.

11. Anne Hathaway told a white lie to get cast in Brokeback Mountain. When Ang Lee asked her at the end of her audition if she knew how to ride a horse, Anne said that she did, despite the fact that she'd never done it before in her life. She learned, though her horse did throw her off once...in front of 300 extras, most of whom worked in rodeos.

12. The stars of Blue Is the Warmest Color only read the script once, and after they were done, director Abdellatif Kechiche told them to forget it and "just let it go and play."

13. The perfume company Demeter Fragrances released a Hedwig and the Angry Inch cologne in honor of the 2001 film, and it purportedly smelled like "hairspray, cigarette smoke, and cheap hotel rooms."

14. In an essay for the Advocate, producer Mitch Kohn recalled that Steven Spielberg made sure that the script for To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar was as funny as he thought it was by sending it to his "comedy meter," Robin Williams. Williams told him to make the movie, but declined the role of Vida, since he thought he was too hairy.

15. Hank Azaria said that Robin Williams slipping on the kitchen floor during The Birdcage scene where they're panicking about dinner wasn't intentional, but everyone committed, so the take made it into the final film. If you watch the clip, you can catch Williams and Azaria laughing.

16. And finally: Lucas Hedges asked his mother to assemble all of her home videos of his childhood so that he could connect with his younger self while filming Boy Erased, and the footage ended up in the opening montage of the movie.
