10 Famous Visits That Got Out Of Hand

1. The S.S. Minnow's 3 Hour Boat Ride

When the two-man and five passenger crew of the S. S. Minnow took off for a "three-hour tour" from Honolulu, they weren't expecting their trip to turn into an extended stay. But when their boat ran into a tropical storm, the group of strangers were shipwrecked on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. And we all know how this one ends (they never get off).

2. Hunter S. Thompson's Trip To Vegas

When Thompson and Zeta Acosta traveled to Las Vegas for an exposé for Rolling Stone on the 1970 killing of Mexican-American television journalist, Rubén Salazar, the short trip grew into something else entirely. The result of the trip became the 1971 book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which first appeared in the November 1971 issue of Rolling Stone.

3. Uncle Jesse's Short Stay With The Tanner Family

While he was only supposed to crash for a little while, Uncle Jesse ends up making his stay on the Tanner's couch a permanent one. And at one point, even moves upstairs to raise a family of his own (hence the name "Full House").

4. Ben Franklin's Trip To Paris

In December 1776, Franklin went to France as commissioner for the United States. He lived in a home in the Parisian suburb of Passy and remained there until 1785. During his extended stay, he had quite a productive trip, including the securing of a critical military alliance in 1778 and negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

5. Chuck Noland's Business Trip To Malaysia

While traveling on business, Chuck wasn't expecting his airplane to crash into the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, his week trip to Malaysia turned into a 1,500 night stay. At least he had Wilson to keep him company.

While his stay was only supposed to be until he got back on his feet, he forms fast bonds with the entire Cohen family, especially Seth, and ends up becoming a permanent member of the family.

9. The Commercial Passenger Flight From Sydney To Los Angeles

What started out as a short trip turned into an extended journey when the passengers of Flight 815 were stranded on a mysterious tropical island in the South Pacific after their flight crashed. Mysterious happenings, fervid arguments and plenty of hook-ups, this short trip ended up lasting them 108 days, if you don't include all of the time traveling.

10. Van Wilder's Eternal Senior Year

Unlike most people, Van Wilder got to live the dream by staying in college for 7 years. Since most of his time was spent throwing parties and "fund raisers," and somehow not acquiring massive amounts of debt, this is one extended stay that most people could only dream about.
