Police allege four men set upon Miller and his friend at about 3:30am Sunday morning in Fortitude Valley.

It's alleged the 18-year-old was punched once in the back of the head and hit the pavement. He was taken to hospital with critical head injuries but died on Monday.

"Two 21-year-old men, one from Coombabah and the other from Tanah Merah, have each been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm," read a statement from Queensland police.

The water polo community started posting tributes to Miller after hearing of his life-threatening condition.
