Local police said Arthur was found at the foot of the Ovingdean Gap cliffs and that members of the public performed first aid on him.

According to ITV News, the coroner's office is preparing a report but at this stage the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Other singers expressed sadness for the Cave family.

Very sad to hear the news about Arthur cave. My thoughts are with nick and the rest of the family. Heartbreaking.

No right to appropriate the grief of a stranger with such familiarity but oh, how my heart aches for Nick Cave & Susie & Earl at their loss.

Nick Cave – known for fronting influential bands The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, and The Birthday Party – released a family statement: "Our son Arthur died on Tuesday evening. He was our beautiful, happy loving boy."
