You need someone who really listens to you without judgment, is able to keep your secrets, loves you without reservation, and gives you physical affection without making you feel awkward. Sometimes humans just can't get the job done.

A Thanksgiving turkey, homemade bread, chocolate chip cookies. Even if you aren't the one who's prepared the food, the warmth of the oven and the smell of a hot meal has always soothed you. The happy anticipation of eating calms you down and reminds you of home.

When you're on edge and want to calm down, you need familiarity and predicability. You have a handful of shows that you know every line to, every swell of their soundtrack, every beat in the dialogue, and somehow you never grow tired of them. You love the feeling of knowing something so well that you feel like it knows you too.

To be honest, you'd be happy if you never saw a lot of the people from your past ever again. But there's a small window of exception for the people who mean the most to you in life. There are some friends who know you so well that you don't even need to talk to them about anything important — you can just goof off or sit quietly and enjoy each other's company. It's this rare kind of friendship that brings you familiarity and comfort during trying times.

Some people just can't appreciate the value of space. You love escapism — when you need comfort, nothing in the world compares with being alone with a good book or a video game. You are protected in your little bubble of solitude, far away from the eyes of others.

There's nothing like the sound of knowing you don't have to go outside. You love the distant roll of thunder and gentle tap of water on your window to drown out your troubles. It's not too quiet, it's not too invasive. You wish you could hear it all the time.
