21 Lit DIY Squad Costumes

No matter how big your squad, your Halloween will be lit with one of these fire costume ideas you can make yourselves.

1. S'mores

This requires at least four people but can expand on how you make your s'more. For example, you can build a triple-decker s'more or put some extra chocolate in the mix if your squad has more than four people.

Just take four pieces of cardboard to make two graham crackers. You can attach the two pieces of cardboard together with ribbon/string to have it rest comfortably on your shoulders. The other two people can dress as the chocolate and marshmallow by wearing all brown or all white.

2. Lala Land

You and your S.O. don't have to be cinephiles to be this musical couple. Plus, this is one you might already have in your closet. All you need is a dress shirt, dress pants, and a tie for Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and a yellow dress for Mia (Emma Stone) and off you go! I didn't have a yellow dress, but a two-hour hunt through local thrift shops found the one pictured above.

3. Super Mario Bros

If your family is your squad prove it with these Super Mario Brothers costumes. One way to do the costumes would be Dad as Luigi, one child as Mario, another child as Yoshi, and mom as princess peach. Peach is probably the most time consuming to make. You'll need a pink princess dress. shiny ballet flats or heels., white gloves and a dollar store crown. Pick up a thrift store pink dress if you don't have one. You can add tulle to underneath the dress to make it puff out more like a princess.

Bonus: Make your pet Donkey Kong. Just add big monkey ears to your furry friend using a headband and add a red tie around the neck. Using felt, cut out a yellow "D" and "K" and tape it to the tie.

An extra fun bonus is to add their colored balloons to each character just like the actual game!

4. The Third Wheel

Living large in the single lifestyle, but feel like your best friend always has a significant other? You can literally be the third wheel for Halloween.

This can easily be done in two different ways. If you have a bike where the front wheel is detachable, just throw some ribbon around it so it is wearable. You can add to it by cutting out a big cardboard three.

If you don’t have access to a real bike wheel the wheel can simply be made with cardboard as well.

5. Delivery Person and Food

I know that most men I know want to do as little work on their costume as possible. So getting out a baseball cap and headphones is as good as it gets for them!

The food item could be a number of things or even just a paper bag! It might take a few hours, glue, paint, and cardboard, but it's fun, easy, and fulfills that need to create.

6. Pac Man

What's better than a funny Halloween costume? How about an easy, affordable costume? Lucky for you this DIY costume may be the easiest of them all. Most of us already have a long black shirt and black pants. However, if you don’t, you can take a quick trip to your local goodwill or borrow them from a friend.

The family wears all black long sleeve shirts and pants. You will need felt and something to stick the felt to the shirt and pant with. For this part, you can use hot glue if you don't mind permanently having this costume. If you don't want to "ruin" the shirt, just use safety pins.

Pick up some felt from your local craft store, and cut out small white circles, you will need enough for everyone. Cut out Mr. and Mrs. Pac-man for mom and dad, you will need yellow black and red for the bow. Since the kids and the dog/cat will be the ghosts, you will need orange, pink, blue, or red felt as well. Helpful hint: using cardboard will help the felt to not fold.

This is sure to be a hit and bring back memories for those born in the 90’s and before!

7. Salt and Pepper Shakers

One friend wears a black t-shirt with a “p” on it and the other friends wears a white t-shirt with an “s” on it. Add a comfortable hat as your shaker tops and you're done! A beanie normally works the best, but to keep it cheap just wear a hat you have.

If you are a 90’s music fan you can be the party wherever you go. You can spice this costume up by jamming to some classic hip hop by salt and peppa.

8. Google Maps

Another super easy idea you can use your closet and junk drawer for. Plain gray t-shirts are pretty cheap if you don't have/want to ruin what you have. Then all you have to do is use yellow duct tape and a black marker to make the streets criss-cross on the shirt. Using local roads makes it personal! If you want to really go for it, you could always print out and pin icons for different businesses and bus stops as well.

For the pins, all you need is some cardboard and red paint/construction paper. Again, use a marker to make the "A" and the "B" and wa-la! You've got a costume that still makes sense when you and your S.O. aren't standing right next to each other!

Bonus: You could always add more pins or someone could be a car to expand this costume to include a bigger squad.

9. Jurrasic Park

The great thing about this costume is it takes absolutely no explaining! Also it's great for any size squad. For mom and dad, this costume takes little preparing. For the dinosaur costumes you can pick some up from the costume store or you can create little dinosaur costumes like the picture provided. Green colored pants, a t-shirt with felt, and a hot glue gun are all you need to create it.

Your little dinos will love this look!

10. Rock, Paper, and Scissors

This classic do it yourself costume, but it requires a lot of cardboard.

For the rock, you just need one box. Open at both ends, use ribbon to step into the box and wear it. To complete the rock, paint it grey. If painting is a talent of yours, try to paint it in a way to create some texture.

The paper would be very similar. You basically want a flat piece of cardboard and you would decorate it to look like a piece of paper. This can also be done with spare project board.

The scissors are most easily be achieved by cutting out the shape of scissors from a large piece of cardboard and decorated to your liking.

11. Yin and Yang

If you're lucky enough to have found that someone that balances you out, why not symbolize balance with your couple's costume? You might have to dig through your dresser to dress in all black or all white, but other than that all you have to do is cut out some felt circles and attach them (black towards the bottom, white towards the top) for this quick costume.

12. Wizard of Oz

There's no place like home! Bring a little Halloween to your home with this great squad costume for a family of four or more. Depending on who wants to be who, you can mix and match the four main characters listed below with others from the film.

For the tin man dress in all gray and stitch a red felt heart to the shirt. Using foil, create other fun elements of tin to enhance your costume as you please.

Scarecrow will need to dress in all black. At your local party store, you should be able to find a Hawaiian shirt and straw for cheap. Use this straw or grass skirt and cut it into pieces to have "falling" out of your clothes.

Cowardly lion might be a little easier to buy from your local goodwill if you get there early enough in the season. If you can't find an affordable lion costume, dress in all brown and pick up a piece of faux fur from your local craft store to make a fierce mane.

Dorothy needs a checkered blue dress, pigtails, and red slippers. If your Dorothy is still a cute little babies, red socks still work. A small stuffed animal or the family dog could always serve as trusty Toto!

13. Soap and Loofa

Looking for some "clean" costumes this Halloween? It doesn't get cleaner than a soap bar and loofa. The loofa will take some extra time to make, but essentially is a shirt/top with tulle from your local fabric store sewn on and a piece of rope/string looped and attached to the top of the shirt. The soap bar just needs a white t-shirt and a matching colored marker.

14. Pineapple Pen

Based off of one of 2017's trendiest videos, this is a costume for those friends that are two peas in a pod.

To successfully pull off the pineapple costume you just need an oversized yellow shirt, a headband, green construction paper, and brown paint.

The other person would be dressed as a pen. Cardboard can be used to make the outside shape of a pen and a cone piece would go on top of the person's head to create the tip of the pen.

15. Where's Waldo?

Last minute, super quick and cute, Where’s Waldo costumes only need red and white striped hats and shirts plus a pair of jeans. Your local party store or dollar store should have play glasses. In a pinch, you could pop the lenses out of generic reading glasses bought at your local pharmacy.

16. Macaroni and Cheese

There is a famous festival in Chicago that pays tribute to Macaroni and Cheese, which hold the best costume of this type. There are several ways for one friend can be the noodles. Some examples are using yellow pool noodles or dressing up as a box of noodles. The other person can easily dress up as cheese by getting or creating a cheesehead, and dressing in all yellow.

17. Flo and Mayhem

No one likes commercials. It's a fact. But this Halloween, feel free to borrow from the funny and well-known car insurance ads. You can even pick your favorite Mayhem ad and add more details to really make it your own.

Flo is super easy too; blue headband, white apron, white outfit, nametag and optional button. You might have to create the nametag and add the "progressive" to an apron, but that doesn't take more than half an hour.

18. Cat Dog

If you are a fan of classic Nickelodeon cartoons then this is the costume for you.

The first thing to do is to get three large yellow/tan colored t-shirts. Two of the t-shirts will be worn and the other will be the body of Cat-Dog.

The third t-shirt is sewn connecting the cat and dog together. Once the third shirt has been sewn onto the other shirts, you can use either sleeve hole to stuff spare plastic bags into the shirt to make the body of cat-dog look more realistic.

Cat-Dog also has spots. You can use a colored duct tape, construction paper, felt, or even a tablecloth. The last things to make this costume perfect are the cat and dog ears.

Two friends that can’t be apart for long might need a little time to themselves after this one!

19. Emoji's

With so many emoji faces, having a large squad is no problem with this one! Extra perk: you can each pick an emoji that fits your personality. Anyone who knows you will get a laugh.

Everyone will need a yellow shirt and black leggings or pants. Using felt, cut out the facial features and hot glue them to the shirt. How quick and easy was that!

20. Ninja Turtles

This squad costume is great for a squad of four! Try not to fight over which turtle you want to be.

You will need four disposable baking trays; these will be your shells. The trays come in many sizes so you can get a size that fits each person in your group. Spray paint the shells dark green. Everyone wears jeans and a green t-shirt.

You will need to cut a colored ribbon to make your eye mask. Once you've cut a length of ribbon, cut slots so you can see.

Each ninja turtle weapon/accessory is just an optional bonus:

Raphael wears a red mask and uses sais.

Some accessories beyond the mandatory Hawaiian shirt and shorts include fanny packs, visors, road maps, sunglasses, and disposable cameras.
