    The effort to send people to Mars suffers from a difficult duality: at once trying to bask in the still-sunny glow of Project Apollo, while simultaneously escaping its long shadow. Examining how Apollo arose, persisted, but spawned no direct offspring is useful as we continue to struggle with the centuries-old allure of the Red Planet.
