Lordt help me! There is a new trend on TikTok, and IDK why, but it has turned my brain to mush. Let me first say: I love TikTok. I watch it 2 inches away from my eyeballs, in the darkness of my room for three hours before bed every night.
But this recent explosion of celebrities using the song "That's Not My Name" by the Ting Tings with various objectives is causing my entire soul to melt and seep into the ground, where I'll become one with the sewer water. Also, I do not dislike any of these celebrities, I AM JUST BAFFLED BY THIS TREND.
Let me explain for anyone who doesn't know it already. I believe it started with Alicia Silverstone. She added a montage of characters she has played with the song playing.
I believe the whole point of it all is to be like, "I'm [insert actor here], NOT Stacy/Mary/Ruby or Janice (pretend names of characters they'd played). Those are just characters!!!" However, the more celebs who do the trend, the less consistent the messaging is.
Like, okay, Jessica Alba's starts off fine, but then it says "Founder" and "Mother." Is she saying she is NOT a founder or mother?? Because factually, she is both of those things.
And Christina Aguilera did one that just stated everything she actually is. Also, does anyone call her "Dirrty?" That's just the era of her music people refer to. I'm confused.
And then there are the versions of these videos whose intent I *think* is to brag about all the movies/TV shows they've been in??? I am very happy for all their credits, but...well, just watch:
Here's Chloe Grace Moretz's. It's great that she played a character named Chelsea. I am happy for her. But TBH, I've never really confused her as a human with that role.
Then there's Rita Ora's. I'm a huge fan and I love you, but there were so many ways this could have been done. Like, remember when Debra Messing called you Rita Oro?? THAT WAS ACTUALLY NOT YOUR NAME!!!
