I Tried The Lumae Skin Microdermabrasion Kit And I'm Never Going Back To The Beauty Salon Again

Honestly, this has taken my skincare routine to the next level.

If you're as obsessed with skincare as I am, you've probably had, or at least heard of, a microdermabrasion treatment at a beauty salon.

If you haven't, here's what you need to know: It's a beauty treatment that uses an applicator with an abrasive surface to gently exfoliate and suck up the dead skin and gunk on your face.

Basically, it's an exfoliation-focused facial.

Microdermabrasion can help even out skin tone and texture, reduce the appearance of pores, blackheads and acne scars, as well as leaving your skin feeling silky smooth. But, getting dermy once a month can be...well, exxy.

Single treatments at a spa in Sydney can set you back anywhere from $50-$200, depending on the package you opt for and where you're getting it done.

Thankfully, the Lumae Skin Microdermabrasion Kit is the at home, budget-friendly solution to the salon treatment. But is it as good as the professional experience?

I was determined to find out, so I got myself a kit.

The kit comes with a rechargeable microdermabrasion handset, three different replaceable tips, each of which are used for different treatment options, as well as a packet of filters and a charging cable. It also comes with a thorough set of instructions — which is one of the few user manuals I actually took the time to read.

Let's break down the features of this bad boy:

The three different tips target different areas of concern. The first is the Diamond tip — which actually composed of diamonds — that is used for deep exfoliation and polishing away dull, tired skin. Then, there's the Small tip, which is perfect for focus areas, such as the nose and chin, and great for removing oily build up and pollutants from the skin. Finally, there's the Oval tip, which is best for promoting blood circulation and encouraging collagen production.

The handset also has five different power levels, so you can adjust it depending on how deep and intense you'd like your treatment to be.

As this was my first time using the tool, I opted for the Diamond tip and the lowest power level, as recommended by the instruction manual.

As someone with a combination skin type, slightly sensitive skin and lots of under-the-skin congestion, I really wanted this product to help even out my skin texture and encourage all the gunk hidden in my skin to come the hell on out.

Like most city dwellers, I also have blackheads on my nose and chin, so was hoping that the Lumae treatment would help clean out those areas and reduce the size of my pores.

To prep my skin, I gave it a thorough clean with my usual face cleanser, before lying down and placing a warm towel on my face for 10 mins to open up my pores.

Next, I tested the power intensity on the back of my hand, to ensure my skin didn't react badly to the treatment.

I waited five minutes to make sure my skin didn't flare up, as suggested by the instruction manual. I also took the opportunity to test out the correct technique, gently sweeping from the centre of my face to the outer edges, which gets A LOT easier with practice!

Finally, it was time to put the tool to work! I immediately noticed the outer layer of my skin gently being lifted and scrubbed away — which was seriously satisfying to watch.

I also noticed that during the treatment, more sensitive parts of my face, like my cheek bones and nose, began to go slightly red. This absolutely did not hurt, but it did signal to me that the treatment was definitely working.

All up, it took less than 10 minutes for me to use the tool over my whole face, going at a slow and gentle pace.

Once I'd finished, I washed my face with cold water, applied a cold towel for a few minutes and finished with my usual moisturiser.

The cold water treatment is meant to tighten up your now-clear pores, while the moisturiser soothes the skin after one serious exfoliation.

The end result? My skin felt smoother and tighter than it had in ages. There's nothing better than the feeling of clean, fresh skin after a dermy treatment, so it was nice to be able to recreate that in my own home.

I did experience a bit of redness, but that settled within about 20 minutes and after a few hours, I noticed that my foundation glided over my face and settled into my skin really nicely.

The next morning, I also noticed that some of the congestion I had building up under my skin had come closer to the surface, which is exactly what I was hoping to achieve.

I'm really hoping that with subsequent treatments over time — and keeping up a good, daily skincare regime, of course — the Lumae Skin kit will help reduce the appearance of my blackheads, too.

It's recommended to wait at least a week before doing the next treatment, so while I haven't had the chance to try the other tips and higher intensity levels, you best believe I'm going to be experimenting with them next weekend!
