How To Avoid A Results Day Meltdown: Get Into Uni Now With This Hack

Getting into university is one of the most nerve-racking experiences young people face, never mind trying to secure a definite place in the hectic melee of Clearing on A-level results day. BREAKING NEWS: the stress can be avoided and, truth is, your chances of securing a place can even be improved by this hack in the Clearing system. Here's how.

Around half a million new students are expected to want a university spot to start this September in the UK, and one in ten will be vying for final places on A-level results day, this year being Thursday 17 August. Crazy numbers, huh?

This might induce some serious stress sweats, heart palpitations or an insatiable appetite for some glorious junk food, if you're a student waiting to apply through Clearing.

Never fear. Apart from the fact that Clearing really isn’t all that scary, there’s a good chance you don’t actually have to wait and compete against thousands of other students trying to do the same thing as you on A-level results day. You could do it now!

You see, Clearing is how universities and colleges fill any places they still have on their courses for this September, and is an ideal way for students to find courses that may suit them. Sometime students enter Clearing if they either don’t get the grades they were hoping for or change their mind on course or location, but anyone can apply through Clearing.

Clearing opened on 30 June, and some universities, including London South Bank University (LSBU) are already taking applications and making offers to prospective students who wish to begin studying in September 2017. In fact, more than 300 people have already applied!

    “BUT HOW?”

If you want to study this September, and have all the results you require to apply, whether that’s BTEC or Access to HE results, A-levels from a previous year or other access qualifications, you do not need to wait until Thursday 17 August to apply alongside those still waiting for their results.

Here’s LSBU’s Head of Student Recruitment, Sarah Gordon, to explain:

“Many prospective students are unaware that Clearing opens well before results day, and if you’re not one of those people awaiting that all-important envelope to know if you will apply through Clearing, there is no need to wait.

“If you just woke up this morning and decided you want to go to university this September, or you applied earlier in the year and haven’t received any offers, or you changed your mind about what you want to study next semester, applying now means that you could have your offer before the majority of Clearing applicants even have their results.

“On results day itself, we expect to receive around 4000 calls to our call centre. It’s a very busy time and this can add to the stress of the situation for those who are calling in. I would encourage anyone who is eligible to apply through Clearing now and save themselves the added anxiety of calling on results day.”
