What Your Hair Is Trying To Tell You And What You Can Do About It

The key to every good relationship is communication. This applies to your hair too. Luckily, L’Oréal Paris Elvive hears it loud and clear.

1. When brittle hair happens. / Via

TRANSLATION: Your hair is thirsty. So thirsty.

HOW TO FIX IT: Both you and your hair need to stock up on the fluids.

The next step: Go for a strengthening shampoo that contains protein – give hair a little love. And put the styling wand away for a little while.

2. When your colour starts to fade. / Via

WHAT YOUR HAIR SAYS IN HAIRSPEAK: “All this lovely shampoo might be cleaning me a little too well…”

TRANSLATION: You’re not supposed to do this. Your glorious, glorious colour is going right down the drain!

HOW TO FIX IT: Almost everything – think sunlight, hot water, and even your shampoo causes hair colour to fade. Reds tend to be the worst offenders. Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat, and make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair.

3. When frizzy hair happens.

WHAT YOUR HAIR IS SAYING IN HAIRSPEAK: "I've got their hair equivalent of a hangover."

TRANSLATION:You've probably overdone the blow-drying, styling iron, colouring, or whatever else you might be torturing it with.

HOW TO FIX IT: It happens when the outermost layer of each strand gets ruffled, so find a conditioner or leave-in that contains oils or keratin. It will help smooth down the hair fibres and provides some frizz control.

4. Your hair is breaking off.

WHAT YOUR HAIR SAYS IN HAIRSPEAK: "You’re not looking after me so I’m leaving you!"

TRANSLATION You’re probably doing too much to your hair. Styling heat, chemical stuff, swimming, an insane amount of brushing – give it a break, yo.

HOW TO FIX IT: Leave it alone. Or, try a hair oil. A little goes a long way! You can use oil on wet or dry hair, or you can leave it in your hair for about 20 minutes before you shampoo. Put a shower cap on to keep the oil on your hair, and pick an oil that smells like flowers, and you'll get a spring-like whiff every time you shake out your hair.

5. You have dandruff. / Via

WHAT YOUR HAIR IS SAYING IN HAIRSPEAK: "Your stress is showing… Literally. People can see it all over your shoulders!"

TRANSLATION: You’re under stress and it’s showing in some pretty obvious ways unfortunately.

HOW TO FIX IT: Try a shampoo that contains selenium. It clears away visible flakes for fuss-free, flake-free, and fabulous hair.

6. Your hair isn't growing. / Via

WHAT YOUR HAIR SAYS IN HAIRSPEAK: "Your hair has a rumbling tummy. If you don’t feed your hair, how can it grow up to be long and strong?"

TRANSLATION: It needs to be fed well to keep long and healthy.

HOW TO FIX IT: Opt for a strengthening shampoo that contains protein. This helps hair to feel stronger so you can hang onto it for even longer without any breaks.

7. Your hair is limp. / Via|Females|96579|Gender/f=CPIHVX/p=3/s=DynamicRank

WHAT YOUR HAIR IS SAYING IN HAIRSPEAK: "You're not treating me right!"

TRANSLATION: If your limp hair is just flopping down like it can’t be bothered with life, you might need to give it a little encouragement.

HOW TO FIX IT: Try a thickening shampoo and avoid applying conditioner too close to the scalp.

8. Your hair is greasy.

WHAT YOUR HAIR IS TRYING TO SAY IN HAIRSPEAK: "Hey – I'm actually super dry up here."

TRANSLATION: When your hair is as dry as a desert, your scalp might be working overtime to produce more oil, making your hair greasy.

HOW TO FIX IT: If you switch to a nourishing shampoo and conditioner (and only apply the conditioner to the ends for a few washes) it'll come good. For an extra boost, add dry shampoo to the roots.

9. Your hair is looking dull and dry. / Via

WHAT YOUR HAIR SAYS IN HAIRSPEAK: "Life is a bit ‘meh’ today…"

TRANSLATION: Your hair wants a bit of attention too, add a bit of shine to it’s day!

HOW TO FIX IT: Bring on the hair masks! A few minutes on the hair after conditioning and it’s like a spa visit for hair that’s been overworked.

10. When your style won't stick.

WHAT YOUR HAIR SAYS IN HAIRSPEAK: "I feel so free and silky… Don't try and tie me in!"

TRANSLATION: Your hair is probably too clean, silky, and smooth, so it’s slipping out of your hair bands and grips.

HOW TO FIX IT: Your hair needs a bit of texture to grip. If you want to wear your hair tied back, avoid washing it that day or the night before. If it looks a bit greasy, a dry shampoo will soak up some of the oil.

Too late? You could brave back-combing, or you could use a texturising spray, powder, or mousse to give it some grip. Finish it off with a blast of holding spray.

Go on, listen to your hair…
