As a parent of an Americops NCCC member, I can tell you, we are not “rich parents”. Our son did it between his undergraduate studies and graduate school. While the pay is minimal, we considered it a wash financially. We did not subsidize him, he learned to budget beautifully, and came out able to pay back about $6000 in student loans and interest. Having it on his resume probably didn’t hurt him getting a full ride to graduate school either, and most importantly, he did real, meaningful work, spending 16 weeks in Joplin working with Rebuild Joplin and other not-for-profits. I highly recommend this program to any young person of any socio-economic level who wants to give back to his country and learn life skills at the same time.
