Pajama Pants... Really??

Sweatpants topped off with sweatshirt, slippers, hair rarely brushed and little to no makeup. I give you the American college student.

It so difficult for Americans to look presentable for a 9 a.m. class. We are all falling into wearing our pajamas to class and rolling right out of bed. Some may argue that looking nice will not enhance our education. But most of our professors dress professionally for class every day. So let’s follow in their footsteps.

According to Kayla Baxter, from “how you choose to dress each morning reflects how you feel about your job, that you take your position seriously, that you are ready to work and that you pay attention to detail.”

Imagine walking into your 9 a.m. lecture, your professor is wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt. There is no way any student would take them seriously, unless you are a gym teacher, that’s the only exception. You look up to your professor to guide you into your future, to teach you the knowledge to success. This isn’t possible when they are wearing a sweat suit.

“Just take 5 minutes out of your day and try to look nice,” SAU’s Production Specialist, Johnna Kerres said. “I look back to when I was in school and girls wore dresses. I just think people will take you more seriously if you dressed nice especially in your future.”

Across the ocean, professors and students wouldn’t be caught dead in sweatpants or “tracksuits” as they call them. They say they only wear tracksuits to the gym and that is all. Their typical school outfit consists of jeans or nice pants, a leather or fur coat, lipstick, leather purse instead of book bag, and flats. Their sense of fashion is always a step ahead of the game. They express their personalities through their clothing and make a name for themselves. Unlike here in America, they rarely follow the crowd and tend to be an individual. What they typically wear to class, is what we here in America go out in.

Yoga pants are an everyday outfit choice for many American girls. They are comfy, go with everything and keep you warm. But a school in Devils Lake, North Dakota seems to disagree. They recently banned students from wearing leggings, jeggings and tight jeans, claiming they are too distracting for faculty and students.

Many years ago students wore suits and ties to class, going along with the motto ‘look good feel good’.

“You’re going to have to look even nicer for work than going to your 10 a.m. class,” Occupational Pre Ot, student Kate Nowak said. “When I look nice for class it helps me pay attention more, than wearing comfy sweatpants.”

Look around the Cosgrove Cafeteria the students who take an extra 10 minutes in the morning to do their hair, put a little makeup on stick out like a pair of jeans in a pile of sweatpants. We are now preparing ourselves intellectually, now is the time to prepare ourselves physically by dressing nicer.
