This novel, written as a diary, follows widower Martín Santomé as he goes about his days in apparent monotony, until romance flourishes between him and young woman, Laura Avellaneda, giving Santomé a glimpse of hope that joy will return to his life. Set in Uruguay in the 1950s, you might find snippets where Santomé comes off as endearing and others of just plain realism...but ultimately, you might just see an old man who wants to believe in love again.

"The Truce: The Diary of Martín Santomé", from Mario Benedetti

A book for anyone who has ever relished in cooking, this classic story follows the life of Tita De La Garza, a woman born in early twentieth century Mexico. Bound against her will to her circumstances, Tita finds freedom and an outlet in the making of delicious dishes, even (especially) when she cannot be with the man he loves. After a long time and many a tragedy, Tita may just be able to be with her true love.

"Like Water for Chocolate", from Laura Esquivel

This read will open up your eyes to the different ways in which love can appear. Ultimately, the overarching theme is less about romantic love and more centered in self-love, but the book is filled with tidbits of earnest wisdom that will leave you thinking for days — and might even give you a new perspective on relationships, especially the one with yourself. 

"Four Seasons Of Love" by Nacarid Portal 

In this upbeat read, a Brazilian pop star who needs to punch up her brand after getting dumped on live TV (yikes!) is paired with a fake boyfriend as part of a PR stunt. What follows is the delightful unraveling of a journey of self-discovery for our protagonist — and a few unexpected romantic feelings that she must confront in the process. 

"Like a Love Song", by Gabriela Martins

If you are single and under pressure from your family to be in a relationship, even if professionally successful, you'll understand Michelle's struggle. Of course, a romantic novel is not a romantic novel without a romantic interest and in a twist of destiny, one of Michelle's admirers comes back from the past and right into her path. Yep, you guessed it: a mess ensues!

 "A Lot Like Adiós" by Alexis Daria

The grittiness and griminess and non-stop hustlin' and bustlin' of New York doesn't necessarily equal romance, but heck, romantic novels love putting our most deep-rooted beliefs to the test! In this story, August's subway commute gets a lot more interesting when they develop a crush on a fellow subway rider, June. Alas, Jane isn't just your typical commuter...matter of fact, they're not even your typical human. (Fun fact: this book incorporates *~time travel~*!)
