Interview As A Method For Learning A Foreign Language

Not a long time ago I completed Michel Thomas French language course. In the end, the author, the well-known and highly respected linguist within the narrow circles, Michel Thomas advised to read a lot of interviews to develop further the language skills without a dictionary if possible. The advice itself was highly controversial, yet I decided to give it a try with one of my “stuck” languages, Indonesian. What I did: 1. Chose books in original with lots of dialogs inside, love stories are the best thing for it. 2. Subscribed to the news of the main Indonesian newspapers social networks 3. Subscribed to Youtube channels which promoted Indonesian musicians and celebrities. One month of daily work without a dictionary with the resources pointed above. Yes, there is a result, my vocabulary expanded tremendously by means of guessing out words and phrases, but the main disadvantage of this method is everlasting UNCOMFORT, which accompanied me along my language experiment mission. I tried to imagine what it would be to supplement this method with the attributes which could make the learning enjoyable and comfortable. I decided to list the supplements in the order of resources mentioned above: 1. Books would be much enjoyable if there could be explanations to the words and their translation. 2. The same thing would nice for the newspapers. 3. Interviews could be supplied not only with the subtitles in English and foreign languages, but also with the introductory explanations of the key words and phrases before the interviews itself. Therefore as I make lessons of Ukrainian at my Youtube channel I decided to apply my experiences and ideas to my new lesson, and made an interview with my father. Besides the double subtitles (English and Ukrainian), I made introductory explanations of key words and phrases before each question.
