This Canadian Politician Expertly Dealt With Racist Heckling

"Love and courage."

This is Jagmeet Singh, an Ontario politician currently running to be leader of the federal NDP.

He's known as the first turban-wearing Sikh man to sit as an MPP in Ontario. He's also no stranger to racism.

He'd barely said hello when a woman stood up and started grilling the candidate.

As Singh tried to do a mic check, the woman launched into a rant accusing Singh of being “in bed with Sharia" and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Just to repeat: Singh is Sikh, not Muslim.

Local news site Brampton Focus captured the whole exchange in a video posted on YouTube.

As it becomes clear the woman isn't going to budge, Singh talks over her, saying: "What do we believe in? Love and courage."

He then calls for a round of applause for diversity as the woman asks, "When is your Sharia going to end?"

"We don't want to be intimidated by hate. We don’t want hatred to ruin a positive event," Singh replies.

After about four minutes, the woman relents and leaves. And that's when Singh showed he won't let people like Jennifer bring him down.

“You know growing up as a brown-skin, turbanned, bearded man, that I’ve faced things like this before. It’s not a problem. We can deal with it," he told the crowd.

”There’s going to be other obstacles that we’re going to face and we’re going to face them with love and courage.”
