Gnat Display Team pilot Kevin Whyman died when his plane crashed at Carfest North 2015 in Oulton Park in Cheshire on Saturday afternoon.
In a statement on Facebook, the Gnat Display Team said that Whyman's "enthusiasm for flying the Folland Gnat was infectious".
Speaking on BBC News shortly after the incident, Top Gear presenter Chris Evans, who opened the event yesterday, confirmed that the pilot flying the plane had died in the accident.
The accident was initially confirmed by Carfest organisers on Twitter.
Attendees of the event tweeted about having seen the plane come down.
Early reports described a red display plane bursting into flames as it crashed into trees.
One attendee captured footage of the plane as it came down.
It was thought that the plane may have been a Red Arrow, but an RAF spokesperson on Twitter confirmed that this was not the case.
Chris Evans said he was "sad to announce" the news.
Police confirmed emergency services attended the scene just after 14.00 BST, according to the BBC.
Festival organisers say the event will continue as scheduled for the rest of the weekend.
