1. Farmcation

Trade your city-slicker ways for a little old-fashioned country living on any number of guest farms located around the globe. Some farm vacations require guests to work in exchange for room and board, while others let you set your own pace. The basic idea, however, is to always experience life outside of the hustle-and-bustle most of us are used to by stepping into a world where everything's fresh-- from the air you breathe to the food you eat.

2. Chautauqua Institution

Take time to feed your mind during a visit to the Chautauqua Institution located in southwestern New York. Established in 1874, the institution offers somewhere around 100 different cultural, political, health, educational, and religious lectures each and every summer. Guests can also enjoy a full schedule of musical concerts, films and public discussions. Located on Chautauqua Lake, those visiting during the institution's season of events also enjoy the comfy accommodations of living in a house, apartment, guest cottage, or condo, which adds to the charm of the small town atmosphere. Of course, hotel and inn accommodations are available, too.

3. Silent Retreat

From Southern California to Ubud, Bali, there are a number of silent retreat centers where one can completely disconnect from the world and indulge in some serious silence. Most offer activities such as group meditation, yoga, lectures, and healthy menu options, too. Depending upon which retreat you prefer, accommodations can range from bare minimum rooms shared with another guest to somewhat luxurious single rooms with full maid service.
