There's A Bunch Of People Who Think Flying The LGBT Pride Flag Should Be An Offence

103 South Australians have petitioned the government.

A South Australian MP has presented parliament with a petition calling for the flying of rainbow flags to be banned across the state.

Member for Finniss Michael Pengilly presented the petition, signed by 103 people from Adelaide and greater South Australia, to parliament on Monday.

The petition requests the house "to urge the government to restrict councils or other organisations from displaying a rainbow flag or any other design of a rainbow as a symbol of homosexuality".

The 103 signatories ask that flying the pride flag is made an offence, punishable by a fine.

Pengilly's office told BuzzFeed News that by tabling the document, he was just acting as a member of parliament in a democracy should.

"This petition was dropped in by a constituent as are many others," a statement read. "It was a petition delivered to Mr Pengilly's electorate office, it contained no bad language or profanities, and he tabled it in parliament."

Pengilly does not plan to put forward legislation on the issue of rainbow flags.

In recent months, various South Australian councils have decided to fly the pride flag, sparking controversy from some corners.

Marion Council's June decision to fly the pride flag was met by an anonymous flyer campaign and an attempt to overturn the decision.

The administrative head of the Copper Coast Council resigned from his position over a decision to fly the rainbow flag.

The parliamentary guidelines state that an MP is "not bound" to present a petition, but it is an "accepted convention" that they will do so if asked regardless of whether or not they agree with its content.

Pengilly has previously said he does not support marriage equality.
