A 24-year-old man is dead and a second man is being treated for injuries after they were allegedly stabbed by a teenager outside the Australasian headquarters of the Church of Scientology.
Emergency services were called to the Scientology centre in Chatswood on Sydney's lower North Shore just after 12.30pm on Thursday, following reports of a stabbing in the driveway.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Jones said a 16-year-old boy was asked to leave the premises of the Scientology centre and as he was being escorted out by two employees – a 24-year-old man, believed to be Taiwanese, and a second man aged about 40 – he produced a knife and allegedly stabbed the younger man in the neck.
The teenager was being removed in relation to a domestic incident that happened on Wednesday, according to police.
"It does not relate to the Scientology premises here. However, resulting from that incident yesterday, the staff on premises here made a decision that he should leave the premises," Jones said.
"He had a lawful reason to be here originally. And they asked him to leave for various reasons. Which we still need to get to the bottom of."
Police believe the teenager has a family member who attends the Scientology centre and who was there at the time of the alleged stabbing. Jones could not say how long the 16-year-old had been at the centre on Thursday.
The teenager dropped the knife after police drew a taser and was then arrested, Jones said. He is currently assisting with inquiries at Chatswood Police Station.
The two men were rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital, where the 24-year-old man died.
The second man, aged around 40, sustained superficial injuries and is in a stable condition undergoing treatment.
The incident occurred on the driveway of the Scientology centre, approximately 150 metres inside the premises.
Asked what sort of weapon was used in the alleged stabbing, police said: "It would appear to be just a very sharp kitchen knife, probably about 20-25 cm long."
The Chatswood centre, known as the Advanced Organisation & Saint Hill ANZO (Australia, New Zealand, Oceania), was opened in September 2016.
According to the Scientology website, the 145,000-square-foot building is the church's largest spiritual centre outside of the United States.
