If you want a peck of apples, you'll receive 2.3 gallons. You may recognize a peck as being the medium-sized bags of produce you find at the farmer's market.

A peck is around 2 gallons

An old bushel was equal to about 4 times bigger than a peck, and today a bushel is equal to about 9 gallons. A bushel of apples may come in a cardboard box or a wooden crate.

A bushel is around 8–9 gallons

How many gallons is in a "bushel" of apples?

This measurement is notoriously tricky to standardize. Because everyone has different sizes of fingers, someone with large hands may have more salt in their "pinch" size than someone with smaller hands.   
But in general, a pinch can be considered 1/16 a teaspoon or 0.010 fluid ounces.

A pinch is around 1/16 of a teaspoon

So don't douse your recipe with sauce if the recipe only calls for "a splash."

A splash is around 1/5 fluid ounces

How many fluid ounces is in "a splash" of sauce?

A little bit of that cinnamon can do a long way to flavor your dessert!

A dash is around 1/8 a teaspoon

Finally, your pie recipe calls for "a dash" of cinnamon. How many teaspoons of the spice do you add?

While you may not recognize each of these measurements, you're well on your way to deciphering those vintage cookbooks. Keep practicing!
