Age-gap relationships are nothing new in Hollywood, and they often cause quite a stir online. Ultimately, the decision to date someone significantly older or younger belongs only to the couple, but celebs have shared their thoughts on their relationships and other people's criticism. Others, however, choose to stay quiet.
Here are 19 Gen Z celebs who've been in age-gap relationships, and what they and their partners have said about it:
1. Billie Eilish, 21, and Jesse Rutherford, 31, dated for seven months before breaking up in May 2023.
While they were together, Billie told Vanity Fair, "It's really cool, and I'm really excited, and I'm really happy about it. I managed to get my life to a point ... where I not only was known by a person that I thought was the hottest fucking fucker alive, but pulled his ass! Are you kidding me? Can we just...round of applause for me? Thank you."
2. Alba Baptista, 25, and Chris Evans, 42, confirmed their relationship in early 2023. They've reportedly been "quietly dating" for over a year.
Neither has publicly spoken about their relationship, but Chris has shared several pictures and videos of Alba on his Instagram story.
"[Marriage and fatherhood are] absolutely something I want," he told People magazine in 2022. "Some things you want just for you, or just for my family and my friends."
3. The Magicians actor Stella Maeve and Deadly Class actor Benjamin Wadsworth have been together since she was 28 and he was 18. They started dating in 2018, then got engaged in 2019.
When they announced their engagement, one of Stella's followers commented, "Isn’t he 19. Feel like he’s rushing into things considering his age."
Ben replied, "Yeah but my dog, you don't know me. You don't know my relationship. I'm living a great life. Now I get to live it forever with my beautiful fiancé."
4. Camila Morrone was in a relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio from age 20 to 25. He's 22 years older than she is.
In 2019, she told the Los Angeles Times, "There's so many relationships in Hollywood — and in the history of the world — where people have large age gaps. I just think anyone should be able to date who they want to date."
5. Sydney Sweeney, 25, is currently engaged to restaurateur Jonathan Davino, 38. They've been together since 2018, the year she turned 21.
They opt to keep their relationship private.
In 2022, she told Cosmopolitan, "I don't date people in the spotlight. I don't date actors or musicians or anyone in entertainment because I can just be normal Syd that way and it’s easiest. I have a great support system. I have people who will battle for me and allow me to be on the pedestal and shine without making me feel like, Oh no, I’m shining too bright and I need to step back."
6. From age 23 to 26, Florence Pugh dated Zach Braff, who is 21 years older than she is. They broke up in 2022.
Following their breakup, she told Vogue, "We weren’t in anyone’s faces. It was just that people didn't like it. They imagined me with someone younger and someone in blockbusters. I think young relationships in Hollywood are so easily twisted because they add to the gossip sites. It's exciting to watch. And I think I was in a relationship that didn't do any of that."
7. Sofia Richie Grainge was about 19 when she and Scott Disick, who was about 34 at the time, got together. Their relationship lasted from 2017 to 2020.
In 2020, shortly before their split, Sofia told Cosmopolitan, "[The criticism of our relationship] doesn't bother me because I'm very happy. Why would I let someone from the middle of nowhere ruin that for me?"
8. Kaia Gerber, 21, and Austin Butler, 31, have been together since late 2021/early 2022.
Though they've made several public appearances together, neither has commented about the relationship.
When asked about it, Austin told GQ, "I don't think there’s anything I want to share about that. But thank you for providing the space."
9. Then-38-year-old Scott Disick dated then-20-year-old model Amelia Hamlin for a few months in 2021.
Early in their relationship, she called him her "dream man" on her Instagram story.
After that story was reposted to Comments by Celebs, many people commented about their age gap. Amelia replied, "Everyone can calm down."
10. Michael B. Jordan, then 36, and Lori Harvey, then 25, dated for over a year before calling it quits in 2022.
In 2021, she told Bustle, "We met, actually, a few years ago. We had some mutual friends. I think we met out, just in passing. ... I was like, 'He's cute!' ... I think we're both very private people naturally. So we just decide, if we take a picture or whatever it is, do you want to post this? Do we not? We have a conversation about it, like, 'You want to post this or we keep this to ourselves?' We know there are people that love and support us and want to see us. So [we want to] give just enough but keep the majority of it just for us. We're trying to find a balance."
11. Then-23-year-old singer and songwriter Goody Grace dated then-46-year-old Kate Beckinsale for a few months in 2020.
Neither made public comments about their relationship, but Kate responded to an Instagram commenter who had something snarky to say about their relationship.
On a post she made about her cat not falling for the tape-box trick, the commenter said, "Try and see if your new tom boy will adhere."
Noticing they probably meant "boy toy," she replied, "Try and see if you can spell and not just goon yourself straight out the gate."
12. From age 20 to 22, Bella Thorne was in an open relationship with Mod Sun, who's 11 years older. They were together from 2017 to 2019.
13. Tana Mongeau, who was 22 at the time, briefly dated Mod Sun after both of them ended their concurrent relationships with Bella Thorne in 2019.
On the H3 Podcast, Tana said, "Mod Sun and I just bonded, and we're like, 'Fuck these past two years of our life. We started hanging out a lot."
She explained that Bella got angry and accused her of breaking "girl code."
"We were young and it was stupid. I was in my just very open, wild LA dating, crazy era," Tana said.
14. Model Nadia Ferreira, 24, married Marc Anthony, 54, in January 2023 after publicly confirming their relationship in 2022.
Thanking her in his 2022 Latin Grammys acceptance speech, Marc said, "Thank you for being with me and giving me your best and making me the happiest man.”
15. Paul Wesley, 40, and model Natalie Kuckenburg, 23, have been dating since late 2022.
They haven't spoken about their relationship to the press, but they document it on Instagram.
16. Singer-model Charlotte Lawrence, 23, and record producer Andrew Watt, 32, have been together since 2021.
They haven't spoken about their relationship, but Charlotte has talked about working with Andrew on her EP Charlotte.
In 2021, she told Atwood Magazine, "Andrew Watt and Happy Perez came in and added the cooooolest sounds and instruments and blew all of our minds — geniuses."
17. Sienna Miller, 41, and A Good Person actor Oli Green, 25, have been linked since early 2022.
In 2022, she told British Vogue, "There's a misogyny that is ingrained in men of my age and older that I don't see in [the] generation below."
18. Of course, a significant issue with age-gap relationships is when the younger person is under the legal age of consent when they meet their partner. Influencer Miya Houston was 19 when she and then-39-year-old Marques Houston got married in 2020. They met when she was 17, but he told Uncensored that there was "no [real] connection until…you know…she was of age."
He continued, "People don't understand it, and I got a lot of backlash for marrying someone that was 19. And you know, when we did finally start to talk, I was like, 'This woman is like me,' and when I would talk to her, she'd just... For one…we had a spiritual connection, and I feel like that's the most important thing. We both love God. We both love Jehovah, and that was key."
19. And finally, Kylie Jenner and Tyga, who's seven years older, met at her sister's birthday party when Kylie was only 14. Three years later, her 17th birthday party took place at his house. They dated from around 2015 to 2017.
On an episode of Life of Kylie following their breakup, she said, "There was absolutely not one thing wrong with me and T. He and I will always, always have a bond. There was no crazy fight, we just decided … well, I decided that I'm really young. I don't want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me, when he's really not that type of person."
