Sometimes, when a series is on the air for a long time, it starts to seem like the writers are running out of ideas. This can result in storylines that are so convoluted it feels like they belong to a different show entirely.
Recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community which TV plotlines were so bad, it felt like they were making it up as they went along.
Here are some of the most frustrating to watch answers:

Some responses have been edited for length/clarity.
1. "For six seasons, we were told that the characters in Lost were NOT in heaven/hell/purgatory, but then they were. Made me so mad!"
2. "I hated when Seinfeld did the 'backwards' episode where they started from the end and showed you what happened 'one hour before.'"
3. "When Archer and everyone went to space (the time when he was in a coma) in Archer. Hated that whole part of the series."
4. "In Gilmore Girls — Rory dropping out of Yale, going to parties with Logan, living with her grandparents, and not speaking to Lorelai. Like, did you see the type of girl she was Seasons 1–4?
5. "For a show that was actually good most of the time, when Grace and Zoe on Degrassi: Next Class were being built up to be a romantic ship, then after they have sex Grace all of a sudden says she’s not gay and has a crush on Zig (her best friend Maya’s boyfriend) who she has never shown any sign of liking before that."
"Even after that, she shows no sign of liking him, but then in the next season, I guess they realized they had to make it seem plausible somehow, so they tried to force it to make it seem like she likes him and it’s incredibly awkward. Next Class was better than the majority of Seasons 13 and 14 of Degrassi, but they really screwed up there."
6. "In Once Upon a Time, when they started adding Frozen characters, then Camelot characters, and I don't even know what else because I stopped watching."
7. "The OC after Season 2. I disliked the new characters, and the storylines became repetitive in Season 3. Then, Season 4 [after Marissa's sudden death] felt like an entirely different show. It’s like they weren’t even trying anymore."
"Shame though, because the first two seasons were outstanding."
8. "Basically the whole of How to Get Away with Murder from Season 3 (when someone tried to frame Annalise for Wes's murder) on. Poor Viola, for how long did she have to drag this show on..."
9. "The 'Timeless Child' storyline in Doctor Who basically upended decades of the show's lore. The modern series was built on the Doctor being the last of the Time Lords, but suddenly, she's not even a Time Lord AND has lived a bunch of regenerations she doesn't even remember. Then they moved onto 'Flux' like nothing ever happened."
"Though I did love Jo Martin as the Fugitive Doctor."
10. "Does the entire [unchronological] Season 4 of Arrested Development count??"
11. "The entirety of Our Kind of People. It was like soap opera troupe mad libs with little context, little explanation, and forgotten storylines."
12. "All of Legacies (which is a spin-off of The Originals, which is a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries) lol."
13. "The first three seasons of BBC's Sherlock were SO GOOD, then Season 4 had to ruin everything by being wayyy too dark and complicated. Like, they made Mary Watson an assassin, and the Holmes brothers had a secret sister locked up on an island — and Sherlock couldn't even remember she existed."
"Honestly, I think they ran out of good ideas after they killed off Moriarty."
