Love Is Cancelled: Conversation SweetHearts Are No Longer Being Sold

Patrick said it best in times like these, love is DEAD.

The most iconic Valentine's Day candy – conversation hearts – will not be sold for the first time in 153 years.

SweetHearts first made conversation hearts in 1866. and, in 1901, Necco took over the brand.

So, like, you can't slide one of these to your crush this year:

I mean, it's definitely debatable on whether or not they actually tasted good, but they have been a staple every year for Valentine's Day.

In fact, according to, last year they were the most popular Valentine's Day candy in America.

So, alas, we say goodbye to the beloved conversation hearts...for one year.

Last September, Necco was purchased by Round Hill Investments, and the SweetHearts brand was then sold to Spangler Candy Company. And, because it takes so long to make the conversation hearts, Spangler Candy Company didn’t have enough time to make them this year. It used to take Necco 11 months to produce 8 billion conversation hearts. (I KNOW, CRAZY.)

The good news is, yes, they'll be back on the shelves next year, when love will return.
