7. 1787 - The passage of the U.S. Constitution gives white male property owners age 21 and over the right to vote.

Racist? Yup. Sexist? Completely. Elitist? Totally. But it was a start.

6. 1870 - The 15th Amendment guarantees the right to vote to all men 21+ regardless of race/ethnicity.

Ha! Take that racism! (Sorta. Not all states ratified this amendment, meaning they didn't have to enforce it.)

5. 1920 - The 19th Amendment gives women age 21 and older the right to vote.

In your face sexism!

4. 1964 - The 24th Amendment makes it illegal for states to charge poll tax to voters.

Taxes and literacy tests were created after the 15th Amendment, to prevent everyone from voting. Minority and poor white voters were "allowed" to vote, but now they could actually vote.

3. 1965 - Voting Rights Act (VRA) authorizes the government to take over registration of voters in states where officials had regularly prevented minorities from voting.

Without a poll tax, states that wanted to prevent minorities from voting used literacy tests, grandfather clauses, and intimidation tactics.

2. 1971 - The 26th Amendment lowers the voting age across the nation to 18.

Because going off to the war, without being able to vote on who's sending you to war, never really made much sense.

1. 1993 - The "Motor Voter Act" allows voter registration in more areas. Like the DMV.
