It was considered really lame at my school (90s to mid 2000s). Popular kids played sports and hung outside, nerds hung out playing video games. Cool kids might have video games but they never talked about it. Maybe it’s different in different places.

I think this must be a cultural expectation, where I live we get wine / beer etc with the meal and then post dinner drinks are paid for by the guests. I’ve never been to a wedding where the bar was free, and I’m in my 30s so have been to a fair few now!
