Guys, You've Been Wearing Your Shorts Wrong, But Here's How To Fix It

It's getting hot in here.

It's summer so that means shorts season, but what's the best way to wear shorts? Like, how can you look your best?

Come along and I'll share with you some quick and dirty tips to look fucking amazing and get tons of compliments on your shorts, no matter what your body type is.

To get to the bottom of how to best wear shorts for the summer we spoke with celebrity stylist Preston Konrad.

He knows a thing or two about how to rock some shorts.

You probably already know that cargo shorts are a travesty... Although, Konrad says that there is a time and place for them.

Seriously, don't wear them unless you're camping, hiking, or maybe taking your kids to Disney or something. "And in the event you still need to wear them, try to find a slim cargo short," Preston says.

The reason cargo shorts are bad has been explained numerous times, but in short: they just don't look flattering.

First, Konrad says, "figure out if there is a reason to wear shorts: is the temperature too high or are you going to a place that's conducive to wearing shorts?"

If your office has a formal dress code or you're going to a wedding (that's not on a beach) or other special event, shorts might not be the best option, no matter what the temperature is.

Figure out the perfect length.

"In general, my rule with shorts is that the length should be somewhere between knee cap and thighs erring closer to kneecap. But your shorts shouldn't go past your knee cap," Konrad advises.

You don't want your shorts to look like capris and if you're reading this you probably don't want to be rockin' booty shorts either.

Figure out the right material.

You don't have to limit yourself to one type of material. There's denim, khaki, seersucker, twill, and a host of other materials out there available for you to try. Experiment with different things and you may be surprised to find a new favorite. The right material can also come in handy when attending a summer formal event like a wedding brunch or baby shower (because denim probably isn't the best option for these). Don't be afraid to dress your shorts up, whenever appropriate.

“A lot of retailers have introduced stretch into their shorts, which I’m a huge fan of,” Konrad says. “So also consider shorts that have a little flex or stretch built into material [for added comfort]."

Don't be afraid to experiment with a drawstring or elastic waistband.

Drawstring and elastic band shorts are great because they give you an added layer of comfort. They're also ideal for finding a better fit than going by waist size only.

And finally, denim cutoffs have their own set of rules.

"It's weird, I love a denim short/cutoff, but I think you have to be careful. They should be slim and not too skin tight,” Konrad says. “If you’re gonna wear a distressed pair make sure the outfit looks appropriate. Wear them with a cool old Metallica t-shirt or vintage rock and roll shirt. You're looking for something that looks appropriate. I wouldn’t wear a formal shirt with your ripped denim shorts."

Now you know some easy simple steps to look your best. But, with all that said, wear what makes you feel good and comfortable.
