What Moon Should You Move To?

Jupiter's moon Io is the driest in the solar system, so no need to pack your umbrella. It's also the most geologically active moon, with 300 mile high sulphuric plumes erupting from volcanoes that rival Mount Everest in height. On the plus side, this activity gives your new home its cool multicoloured surface. Sadly it also makes it smell a lot of sulphur. Oh well, you can't win 'em all!

Good news! You don't have to go very far to reach your new home: just hop on a shuttle and you'll be there in no time. Sadly the moon's atmosphere is very tenuous so you'll only be able to explore your new stomping ground in a spacesuit, but that's ok because spacesuits are cool.

The Moon

Don't want to have to climb up any hills every again? Move to Jupiter's moon Europa – it has the smoothest surface out of all the moons in the solar system. It is, however, entirely covered in ice, so bring your skates and/or cross-country skiing gear. Scientists think there could be a vast ocean underneath Europa's icy surface, and that the ocean might even contain some form of life, so I hope you're ready to make scientific history with a major discovery.

How do you feel about setting sail on a sea of methane? Saturn's moon Titan is the only other body in the solar system with weather – except it's made up of hydrocarbons, not water. This weather system means the moon has a ton of features that will be familiar to Earth inhabitants, including dunes, rivers, lakes and seas. It also has an atmosphere – just don't breathe it in or anything.

I hope you're into geology, because Enceladus is a geologist's dream. It has all kinds of craters as well as much younger terrain that appears to be deformed by tectonics. Oh, and it has huge ice volcanoes at its south pole spewing out geysers of water vapour and ice that make up one of its planet Saturn's rings. Scientists also think the moon is harbouring a huge ocean under the surface of its south pole. So what are you waiting for?

Enceladus

If you like the colour red, you've come to the right place. From Mars' moon Phobos you'll have the best view in the solar system of the red planet – maybe you'll even spot a robot or two roaming its surface. You might think you'd get bored easily on a moon with a radius of just 11km, but Phobos has so little gravity you'll mostly be occupied just trying to stay in one place. Good luck!

Jupiter's moon Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system! It has a core of liquid iron and an ocean under the surface that might have more water than all of Earth's combined. So pack your walking boots and your diving gear.

Pluto's moon Charon is a tenth of the size of the dwarf planet, and likes to throw its own weight around, affecting Pluto's orbit. We don't know a ton about it, so if you're up for being a scientific pioneer, Charon is the moon for you! Its temperature never gets that much above absolute zero, so don't forget to pack your thermals.

Do you like craters? Pack up and move to Saturn's moon Mimas. It's got craters galore, including one that, if it were on Earth, would be wider than Canada with 120 mile high walls.
