Lipstick has the potential to change the way you look faster and more efficiently than any other makeup product.

It just peps up your face! I am in a period where I am deeply tired, clamoring for self-esteem, and job-hunting. So I’ve been wearing a lot of lipstick, to keep the haters at bay. And by haters, I mostly mean myself.

Which brings me to my list of amazing lip products. But the best thing about these amazing lip products is that they're all cruelty-free. Listen, I know it can feel hard to walk past all the excellent packaging in the drugstore makeup section, but there are so many great cruelty-free options out there that you don't need to fuck with anything that was tested on animals. Animals are the nicest things we have on this planet! They are like 100 times nicer than any human! So please! Keep your makeup cruelty-free when you can.

1. Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick, a serious matte for an unbeatable price.

This was a classic case of being price pulled in by a bargain. I mean, $3 for a tube of matte lipstick! I have some mattes that hover around $30, so this was a scenario I had to explore. I will warn you that it is shiny when you pull the applicator out. So while you are raising it to your lips, you may fear that you actually bought a gloss, but trust me: Swipe it on. Then, watch — with the same awe and wonder you used to watch a Hypercolor shirt (which are totally due for a comeback, btw) change color with heat of your hand — as the formula changes from a gloss to a matte. And not just a mini-matte. A HARD MATTE. A serious MF-ing matte. A badass matte.

Get it from Amazon or Target for $2.99+ (available in 13 colors).

2. Burt’s Bees Satin Lipstick, a color that goes on smooth and leaves your lips even smoother.

The packaging on this one, let me tell you: like an elegant tube of honeycomb. The shade of the lip color glows from underneath the honeycomb pattern, so you know without a doubt what color you have grabbed and thrown in your bag. I really love pulling this puppy out of my purse and applying it in front of other people because it makes me feel like a movie star. The consistency is super smooth. Honestly, it makes life feel a little bit easier, the way it just glides onto your lips, and when it starts to come off as you move through your day, you don’t really care, because it’s from Burt’s Bees and you trust that the stuff in there as natural. So you just relax, and ingest it.

Get it from Amazon for $6.11+ or Walmart for $7.63 (available in 18 colors).

3. Nudestix Cream Lip & Cheek Pencil, whose unassuming appearance hides a gorgeous wash of color that will perk up your whole face.

I totally underestimated this little black pencil when it showed up in a sample box of products. I could barely make out the name of the product, and the color — a neutral beigey-pink — was nothing to write home about. Then I tried it. And I began scouring the web for all the other colors I wanted. This stuff is like half lipstick, half lip balm; it perfectly toes the line between two worlds. You know when beauty companies use the term "wash of color" and you’re like, "Dudes, c’mon, that’s a little ridiculous." IT’S NOT RIDICULOUS. IT JUST WAS MISUSED UNTIL NOW. The Nudestix Lip & Cheek Pencil is like a wash of color on your previously drab, sad face. I have only ever used it on my lips, but now that I’m thinking about how sad I look today, I think I’m going to go put some on my cheeks too. They literally tell me to do that in the name of the product. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Get it from Sephora or Ulta for $24 (available in eight colors).

4. Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick, an amazingly long-lasting lip color (which has since been tragically discontinued, but which has a cousin in Tarte Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick).

This lipstick is amazing. It honestly stays on for 12 hours. I don’t even know how that’s possible. But I have lived through it so I can tell you that it’s true. It’s like, it goes from being something you put on to a part of your lips. It’s like the chicken and the egg. Who was here first? You don’t even know. Unfortunately, Tarte has halted the production of this stuff. So send your emails, your faxes, and your telegrams because the world is a better place with this in it.

But in the meantime, their Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick makes some of the same bold claims — hydration! 12-hour wear! — and based on its reviews (4.8 stars), it has a devoted fan base of its own. Plus, now that I've seen it with my own two eyes (on my own two lips), I believe the Tarte hype. (And, of course, all Tarte products are cruelty-free.)

Get the Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick from Tarte for $21 (available in 29 colors).
