10 Of The Most Cringeworthy Lip Sync Fails

Iconic for all the wrong reasons.

1. Lindsay Lohan

Year: 2004

Venue: Good Morning America

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? When she forgets to start singing at 2:13.

This maybe should've been our first cue that Lindsay Lohan wasn't going to be an Oscar-winning actress. It's bad enough that she flubbed a cue, but honestly she wasn't even trying to sell the performance before that happened.

2. Hilary Duff

Year: 2004

Venue: MTV's New Year's Eve Live special

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? The glitchy "backing track" at 0:44.

What's worse than a flubbed cue? How about a vocal track that skips. To her eternal credit, Hilary pretended nothing was going wrong and powered through until the end of the song, but that doesn't make the clip any easier to watch.

3. Britney Spears

Year: 2007

Venue: MTV's Video Music Awards

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? ... all of them?

Grass is green. Sky is blue. Britney Spears doesn't sing live. These are just facts. But Britney fans didn't mind until she stopped doing choreography. The issue with this now iconic-for-all-the-wrong-reasons performance wasn't that she didn't sing, it's that she didn't sing or dance.

4. Katy Perry

Year: 2013

Venue: NRJ Music Awards

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? When she shows up on stage, late, with her microphone by her side at 1:03.

By the time Katy Perry started singing live, the damage was already done. The show's host had already stopped the show and asked her to start again because there were some "technical" issues, aka the song started playing before she hit the stage. Whether Katy missed her cue or the show producers screwed up, this is a particularly cringeworthy moment in lip-sync history.

5. Selena Gomez

Year: 2013

Venue: Jingle Ball

Was the performance televised? No.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? The missed lyric at the 0:58 mark.

For her part, Selena didn't seem particularly happy about the performance either. When the lights went out she cursed into her mic, unaware that it was still (ever?) on.

6. Beyoncé

Year: 2013

Venue: President Obama's second inauguration

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? There isn't one. King B crushed it.

Let's be honest, this performance was **flawless. It was all the postshow did-she-or-didn't-she drama that made us cringe.

7. Ashley Tisdale

Year: 2007

Venue: Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? It's impossible to just choose one.

Look, all performers at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade lip-synch. That's just a fact. But most of them do a better job than Ashley Tisdale did in 2007. The High School Musical performer looked like, well, a high school musical performer.

8. Nicki Minaj

Year: 2012

Venue: The Today Show

Was the performance televised? Yes.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? The beginning is pretty bad.

Nicki Minaj's mic was on — she made clear every time she made a weird growling sound — she just didn't seem particularly interested in using it for its intended purpose.

9. Justin Bieber

Year: 2012

Venue: Opening night of the Believe Tour in Glendale, Arizona.

Was the performance televised? No.

Most obviously lip-synched moment? When he starts to vomit.

Justin Bieber has many talents, but vomit-singing probably isn't one of them.

10. Ashlee Simpson

Most obviously lip-synched moment? The part where the wrong song plays...

ICONIC.
