_Black Beauty_, the classic tale of the carriage horse in England, was written by Ana Sewell 1877 to instill compassion and kind treatment towards horses and animals. There have been multiple recreations in film since.

**The Lord of the Rings** trilogy was written in between 1937 and 1949, featuring several horses. Shadowfax was owned by King Théoden, King of Rohan, and given to the Wizard Gandalf the Grey.

**War Horse**, the British novel by Michael Morpurgo, was published in 1982. The book takes readers through the horrors of World War Two and the journey all warriors, big and small, had to go through to return home. There have been several adaptations in film, radio, theater, and literature.
