25 Underrated Rom-Coms That Are Honestly Brilliant

Deliver Us from Eva is an absolute masterpiece!

We asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us their favorite underrated rom-coms, and, boy, did they deliver. Here are the brilliant results:

    1. Penelope (2006)

    Summit Entertainment

"Penelope is such a slept-on movie! It’s my go-to movie for when I’m feeling crappy. It stresses the importance of self-love and acceptance, and has the heroine 'saving herself' before she gets the guy. Plus, it’s cute, funny, and has a great cast led by Christina Ricci. Catherine O’Hara, Peter Dinklage, Reese Witherspoon, and James McAvoy do spectacular jobs as well."

    2. Someone Great (2019)

"Someone Great is severely underrated! It's beautifully written and totally original. The acting is wonderful, the story is realistic, and it's a fun and modern take on love."

    3. About Time (2013)

    Universal Pictures

"Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams do an amazing job with the romance aspect of the movie, but where most rom-coms end with the couple getting together, this one moves forward with a beautiful story about living each day to the fullest. Unlike most stories about time travel, this one has nothing to do with saving the world or preventing terrible disasters, and has everything to do with love, family, and life. It’s one of those movies that will stick with you for a few days after."

    4. Deliver Us from Eva (2003)

    Focus Features

"Deliver Us From Eva is a true gem. It's a modernized version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, starring our amazing queen and feminist icon Gabrielle Union."

    5. Plus One (2019)

    RLJE Films

"Plus One is the only rom-com I’ve seen where the female protagonist is allowed to be gross, weird, and normal. I love it."

    6. A Lot Like Love (2005)

    Buena Vista Pictures

"A Lot Like Love with Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher is one of my absolute favorites! There’s something about it that feels more realistic than others. The way the characters cross paths over the years as they continue to grow up, but never have the right timing, is so brilliant and good."

    7. Half Magic (2018)

    The Bubble Factory

"Half Magic with Heather Graham, Stephanie Beatriz, and Angela Kinsey is all about sisterhood with a lot of sex and romance at the same time. It’s perfect in every way, and I don’t know anyone else who has watched it!"

    8. Set It Up (2018)

"Set It Up is one of my absolute favorite rom-coms! It has a stellar cast — Zoey Deutch, Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs, Glen Powell, Tituss Burgess — and is so funny and heartfelt. It's a new twist on the classic rom-com tropes and features strong women and vulnerable men. It definitely deserves more love!"

    9. Love, Rosie (2014)

    Constantin Film

"My friend suggested Love, Rosie to me — it's a really good rom-com with realistic depictions of what romance and life are really like. I highly recommend!"

    10. The F Word (2013)

    Entertainment One

"The F Word (titled What If in some countries) stars Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan. This is just such a sweet and quirky love story with a fantastic cast. This movie makes me happy every time I watch it, and I feel like not a lot of people know about it. It very much went under the radar."

    11. Something New (2006)

    Focus Features

"Something New with Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker is rarely talked about. Along with a cool soundtrack, it stresses the importance and responsibility of pursuing your own happiness."

    12. Celeste and Jesse Forever (2007)

    Sony Pictures Classics

"Celeste and Jesse Forever is such a great, underrated movie. They're so believable as a couple. I love this movie!"

    13. The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

"I'm honestly mad it took me so long to find this rom-com — Jessica Williams is beyond brilliant and really brings her comedy A-game in every scene. She needs to star in more movies!"

    14. 10 Years (2011)

    Anchor Bay Films

"I’m always surprised when people say they haven’t seen 10 Years because it has such a star-studded cast. It literally stars Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Chris Pratt, Jenna Dewan, Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, and pre-fame Oscar Isaac! Outside of the cast, the movie follows a group of friends as they attend their 10-year reunion. They’re all confronted with their past selves, what they want for their futures, and whether they’ll actually go for it. It’s honestly such a cute little movie."

    15. Only You (1994)

    TriStar Pictures

"Only You with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei is a must-see! The cinematography is wonderful, and the chemistry between them is straight fire."

    16. Away We Go (2009)

    Focus Features

"Away We Go isn't a traditional rom-com, but it's a sweet and funny movie with a relationship at its heart. John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph play a couple struggling to figure out where to build a good life for their first child, and, naturally, hijinks ensue."

    17. Sleeping with Other People (2015)

    IFC Films

"Think a present-day version of When Harry Met Sally...! Alison Brie is just so good at portraying this character, and I relate to her on so many levels. This movie is smart, quirky, and a fantastic representation of modern love stories."

    18. The Way He Looks (2014)

    Lacuna Filmes

"The Way He Looks is an underrated LGBTQ movie. It's about a teenager who's blind and searches for his own independence. He develops a crush on the new kid at school, and you sort of follow their will-they-won't-they relationship. I won't spoil anything, but trust me when I say that it's an extremely cute movie."

    19. Jumping the Broom (2011)

    TriStar Pictures

"Jumping the Broom is packed with an all-star cast! It tells the old tale of the future mother-in-law hating her son's fiancé, but eventually she comes around. There's so much soul to it."

    20. Must Love Dogs (2005)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"It has a fairly cookie-cutter premise: two divorcees try to get back out there and suffer through disastrous dates with others, but they keep missing their moment. Diane Lane and John Cusack are terrific and relatable as the leads, and there are many sweet moments you wouldn't expect. It makes me laugh and smile every time I watch it — and, yes, there are dogs."

    21. Home Again (2017)

    Open Road Films

"I thought Home Again was going to be unmemorable, but it was actually really good!"

    22. Love Wedding Repeat (2020)

"It’s hilarious, charming, and features great actors, like Sam Claflin. This is one of the few movies that actually makes me laugh out loud!"

    23. Forget Paris (1995)

    Columbia Pictures

"Seeing Debra Winger and Billy Crystal fall in love in Paris is magical, and it makes me want to go there even more."

    24. Just Wright (2010)

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

"It's such a good film, filled with positive vibes and beautiful people throughout. I love the chemistry between Common and Queen Latifah. Whenever I’m feeling down, I pop this in the DVD player."

    25. And Imagine Me & You (2005)

    Focus Features / BBC Films

"A newly married straight woman begins to have ~feelings~ for the florist at her wedding. It's a sweet and funny rom-com — Piper Perabo and Lena Headey are wonderful together!"
