31 Ways To Change Up The Outfits You Always Wear

Call Glinda, Paolo, Stacy and Clinton, all of the experts — it's makeover time for your go-to OOTDs.

Unless otherwise specified, all sizes in this post are listed in women's.

    1. Tuck a favorite romper or a lightweight dress into a skirt, and voila, you've got a new top!

    2. Try Stylebook, which is basically the app version of Cher Horowitz's smart closet, only with more features. It lets you virtually mix and match your wardrobe, plan outfits, track what you actually wear, make packing lists, and even keep all your style inspo in one place. It'll help you visualize soooo many fresh ways to wear all the cute stuff you own.

    3. Or if you prefer pen and paper planning, you can download a set of wardrobe planner pages including one for mapping out tops, bottoms, shoes, and accessories for each occasion, a place to make a shopping list, a page for recording your go-to outfits and favorite colors and describing your style, and even a template for turning a journal page into a fashion mood board. Get ready to never say "I have nothing to wear" again!

    4. Let cool socks peek out from your shoes for an eye-catching, high-fashion touch.

    5. Play with proportions and show off your shoes by cuffing your jeans. Bonus: it'll disguise frayed hems and make an old pair look new.

    6. Use bold lipstick as an accessory to add a shot of color to a neutral outfit *or* make one of the colors in a print you're wearing really pop. That dress you've worn a hundred times will be a whole new look with a red lip — trust me.

    7. A fabulous statement earring can have the same instant upgrade effect. Instead of simple studs, throw on a bold pair and it almost won't matter what the rest of your outfit looks like — compliments are p. much guaranteed.

    8. Find a great pair of sunglasses you can pop on with every outfit to instantly add an "I'm a VIP" vibe to any look.

    9. Take advantage of the basically endless ways to style scarves, and remember: they're not just for your neck! Just knotting one you've had forever in a new way can feel like a major style upgrade.

    10. Or try knotting a fave scarf around the handle of your bag to give your purse new life (and for a look that screams "I just got off the red-eye from Paris").

    11. Rock dressy shoes with casual outfits and vice versa. Sneakers and combat boots look badass with party dresses, and heels dress up casual dresses and jeans.

    12. Stack bracelets to give any outfit a personal, eye-catching accent. The trick to a great stack? Mixing the width and texture of your arm candy, while keeping a consistent color scheme.

    13. Think beyond basic black tights. Tights aren't just for staying warm — they can add a whole other level to a look. Fishnets are especially awesome, since they're so lightweight. Rock them with shorts, dresses, or even under ripped jeans.

    14. Keep the clothes you wear all the time looking fresh in a different sense with an easily portable handheld steamer. "Hopelessly" wrinkled clothes may not be so hopeless after all.

    15. Play around with how you style a button-down shirt. Rock it in place of a jacket by wearing it open over a top or knotted over a dress, or just undo the bottom couple of buttons and knot the front rather than tucking it in.

    16. And make any top and bottom combo look fresh by only tucking in the front. Or, if it's a button-down, try tucking in just one side for an effortless look!

    17. Upgrade an old pair of shoes or make a casual pair temporarily more ~formal~ with removable shoe clips, which are basically jewelry for your kicks!

    18. Your fave bra doesn't have to be for your and bae's eyes only! Let a strappy or lacy bralette peek out from under a blazer or a low-cut top to lend an extra flirty touch to your outfit, or even just add some interest to a plain tee or tank.

    19. Master the basics of pattern mixing, and don't be afraid to play around. Your leopard print flats and floral skirt are made to pair with wayyyy more than just basics (in fact, they'd probably be cute together). Tossing on a contrasting print jacket or accessory basically creates a whole new 'fit.

    20. Make a spaghetti-strap summer dress less revealing or more wearable even when it's chilly by popping it over a basic crewneck tee, a thin turtleneck, under a moto jacket, or some combo of the above.

    21. Sheer and lace tops also work great for layering under dresses!

    22. Personalize a plain denim jacket with an assortment of fun enamel pins and/or patches.

    23. Invest in a great faux-leather moto jacket, then toss it over pretty much everything in your wardrobe. I can't think of a single thing — whether it's a floral dress, a tee and jeans, a jumpsuit, or even a formal gown — that wouldn't go from blah to ~fashion~ real quick under one of these.

    24. Slide on a hair accessory (or several) to add a cool focal point to your look that'll stand out even more than regular jewelry — and keep all eyes on your cute 'do, of course.

    25. Simply switching up the shoes you wear with an old outfit can totally change the vibe. Reach for a somewhat more unexpected pair you already have in your closet (like sneakers instead of sandals with your favorite floral dress or swapping from flats to heeled booties with jeans), or treat yourself to a statement shoe that'll ~kick~ everything you wear it with up a notch.

    26. If you love the layered look but hate the bulky feeling of layers, try a collared dickey to dress up a sweater, sweatshirt, or crewneck dress. Bonus points if it has glam embellishments.

    27. Knot a plaid shirt around your waist with a solid-colored outfit for a little bit of pattern and a major cool factor. It's a great way to still rock your fave flannel in warmer weather *and* style up plain dresses, leggings, and bike shorts.

    28. Add polish to a simple tee- or sweater-and-jeans combo by looping on a minimal chic belt belt, especially one with an eye-catching buckle.

    29. Make even the geekiest of graphic tees (you know, the ones you usually just pair with jeans) look all ~fashion~ by tucking them into a high-waisted skirt or pair of shorts.

    30. Opt for a cool faux-leather take on a fanny pack that's a belt and a bag all in one. Gone are the days of fanny packs being frumpy — it'll add a trendy edge to a look, whether you rock it around your waist or in a cross-body style.

    31. And finally, say "screw it" to seasons, and don't limit your wardrobe by labeling things for just summer or winter. Put sundresses and mini skirts on with tights, rock a lightweight sweatshirt with jean shorts, throw a skimpy slip dress on under a jacket, and pair your bulkiest winter sweater with a swingy midi skirt for a fall-friendly look. You'll get so much more out of your wardrobe and create a cool, eye-catching contrast.
