If you've gone to see the Disney's movie Tomorrowland, then you've seen the general bad ass-ness of Casey, played by Britt Robertson, and Athena, played by Raffey Cassidy (more about her phenomenal performance here). I completely loved this movie for its message and how it had strong female characters. After I finished watching the film, my best friend and I gushed over how awesome Casey was for her smarts. My best friend is an engineer so any time we find a smart, female role model we talk about how great they are and how they can be an inspiration for girls everywhere. As you do.
Some spoilers from here on. Ish.
I think it's safe to say Casey is the main character of the film. Frank Walker, played by George Clooney (you might have heard of his super incredible wife), is definitely a main character as well, but Casey really leads the movie with her journey to find Tomorrowland. She shows how dedication, intelligence, and optimism can change the world. Throughout her journey, Casey influences the people around her and shows how to fight for what you want which I absolutely LOVED because she became a great advocate for female leadership. Bravo Disney. Athena is similar in that she pushed the plot of the movie along and found the people that had potential to change the world. She also stood up for herself and could fight heroically against the bad guys/robots. For a 12 year old girl to watch someone on screen kick ass the way Athena did is inspiring. I wouldn't consider Athena a ~main~ character, only because you don't learn her whole life story throughout the film as you do with Casey and Frank. But she's definitely up there.
Since my best friend loved the movie so much (saying it's her new favorite Disney movie), I thought it would be a great idea to get her a gift from the movie. She's in the Disney college program and getting her a Disney gift is appropriate. So when I went to look at the adorable Funko Pop! figures and only found these:
I was at first confused by the cuteness. Then, when I realized there was no Funko Pop! of Casey or Athena, two of the stars of the movie, I was completely outraged! They had a figure of the secondary character, David Nix, and a younger version of Frank Walker, but neither of the two female roles from the movie.
Naturally I showed my best friend my disappointment through a "colorful" text message which was followed by a rant similar to this post. I just don't understand why the only three figures for Tomorrowland are the men of the film when there are two women characters that are crucial for the plot of the movie. I'm not saying the men figures aren't appreciated, they surely are, but there are TWO OTHER IMPORTANT CHARACTERS IN THE MOVIE.
Maybe Funko Pop! is manufacturing the figures of Casey and Athena right now! But why wasn't Casey a priority figure for the products? Even the trailers of the movie primarily featured her story. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Similar instances have happened in other movie merchandise as well. Everyone knows about Black Widow, and then there's also the whole thing about the lack of women directing movies in the first place.
Maybe I've answered my own question of why there is no Casey or Athena figure from Tomorrowland, but I really hope I didn't, because that would mean Funko Pop! doesn't value what the two characters represent to the women and girls that watch the film. That would suck, because the characters represent that girls CAN be smart, brave, dedicated, compassionate, witty, and optimistic.
So even though Funko Pop! doesn't have any fun merchandise for Casey and Athena, the leading ladies of the movie, let's hope that everyone that has seen Tomorrowland can appreciate what Casey and Athena have to offer so we really can have a better tomorrow.
