12 Reason Girls Owes Us More Than 12 Episodes

Now that Girls is done and dusted for another year, let's look at a couple of reasons why 12 episodes is just not enough!

1. Because the Characters that were once as familiar as our own BFFs are no longer relatable.

Hannah hasn’t yet climbed out of the psychological hole she dug herself in Season 2, and Jess, Marnie and Shoshanna have become such assholes no on wants to relate to them.

2. Because there were too many loose ends.

Is Hannah going to write another book? Is she back at Ray’s coffee shop after spectacularly quitting her well-paid corporate job? Is Jessa going to be charged with ‘breaking and entering’ for robbing the shop she worked at to pay for a cocaine binge? Is Shosh going to graduate? Does Adam know that Caroline is pregnant and living downstairs with her baby-daddy Laird?

We don’t know. I guess now we’ll never know.

3. Because Jessa didn’t get any screen time.

Jessa’s season arc went from hating life in rehab to hating life back in the city… now that I think about it; did Jessa even have any scenes with the other girls?

4. Because Shoshanna didn’t get any screen time.

Aside from her uber amazing smackdown of the entire cast during the Beach house episode, Shosh has been relegated to and completely wasted in the background – for some utterly unknown reason. After a blazing premiere ep in which she announced her resolution to make the most of life in her final year of college, we are then only given a handful of scenes depicting her failed search for a relationship and 4 years of college ruined by a missing book – which of course meant she had to run back to her ex and beg him to take her back…?

5. Because there wasn’t enough time to appreciate new characters.

We were introduced to so many interesting, dynamic and original characters this season – and yet when I sit down to write this, I can’t name them… except Patti Lupone – but I don’t think cameos count.

6. Because it would be good to actually see more of Hannah’s work.

I understand that Hannah reading her work out loud would get boring, and the whole “voice over” writing style has been done (Carrie Bradshaw), but if they want us to feel sympathetic to Hannah’s dreams, if they want us to believe she could be the voice of our generation and if they want us to put up with her endless self-sabotaging, give us a little more – show me, don’t tell me that Hannah actually has talent. (This is in no way directed at Lena Dunham, who some people think Hannah is a true reflection of - Lena is an incredibly driven, successful and inspiring writer.)

7. Because they have more Writers now – why can’t they produce more episodes?

Although the first groundbreaking, award winning season was written almost entirely by Lena Dunham, the second and third seasons were the product of a writers room, with as many as seven writers contributing to each season. And it’s not like they should run out of ideas… which brings me to my next point -

8. Because SATC gave us 18 one hour episodes per season.

I understand the importance of quality over quantity – but if Sex and the City can produce 18 hours per season for 6 seasons, Girls should be producing more than 6 hours (12 half hour episodes). With our 21st century binge viewing habits, that’s not a marathon – it’s a sprint.

9. Because HBO can afford to invest more in such a popular program.

Like, seriously, they’re putting $80mil per season into Game of Thrones. The profit margins on Girls must be HUGE.

10. Because the audience is extremely engaged – they deserve more.

The Girls team went to great lengths to build fan engagement pre-season via social media – why only take advantage of that for 12 weeks of a 52-week year… a lot of work for little return on both sides

11. Because there’s nothing else quite like it currently on television.

Does any other sit-com slash drama slash romance slash coming-of-age story capture the inherent struggle that comes with being an over-qualified, under-experienced, financially struggling, morally ambiguous, big-dreaming twenty-something in our day and age?

12. Because now I have to wait an entire year for the next new episode of Girls…
