20 Things You’ll Probably Use For Years After You Buy Them

Useful, durable finds that you just might wish you'd known about sooner.

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, BuzzFeed may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

    1. A 3-in-1 avocado tool that you definitely need if you eat at least one avocado a week — you'll be able to cut it open, pit it, then slice each half into seven perfectly even pieces before you can say "toast."

    Amazon / Via

Read one BuzzFeeder's full review of the three-in-one avocado tool!

Get it on Amazon Canada for $12.99.

    2. A produce saver that does exactly what it says: keeps fruit and veggies fresh longer (up to two weeks), so you actually end up eating more of your food instead of tossing it.

    Natalie Brown / BuzzFeed

The average Canadian household ends up throwing away $1,766 worth of food each year, so they'll save you money, too.

I've been using a set of two of these containers since March 2018 (that's basically two years) and STILL love them, because they actually do work and at this point have saved me from throwing countless strawberries, spinach leaves, bell peppers, nectarines, and cherries in the trash — instead, I've been able to enjoy basically every last bite, even when it's taken me 10+ days to finish something! Read my full FreshWorks produce saver review for more. They're completely top-rack dishwasher-safe (I run 'em through all the time). And although it's not surprising considering they're plastic containers, they show absolutely zero signs of age after the two years of regular use. (Note: don't put anything showing signs of mold in the containers, because in my experience it can make it grow faster.)

Get it from Amazon Canada for $19.53+ (available in several sizes and in packs of three or four).

    3. A belt made with full-grain leather, aka a thick single piece that won't break, tear, crack, fray, or split, even if you wear it every single day, year in and year out.

    Amazon / Via

Seriously, these belts have a 101-year warranty because they mean it.

Get one on Amazon Canada for $47.22 (available in sizes 18-50).

    4. Some tip-out drawers for your kitchen sink, so every time you do dishes from now until who knows when, you have an incredibly convenient storage spot that keeps clutter at bay.

    Amazon / Via

Plus they let you take advantage of all the extra storage space hiding behind those fake drawers! The trays themselves are designed to install with screws (which would be the most permanent and durable way to go about it), but some reviewers have had success with Command Strips. Either way, you can easily pull them out to wipe down in the sink if they get gross. My parents have had these in their house for over three years at this point, and they're still just as functional and useful as they were on day one.

Get a two-pack on Amazon Canada for $33.74 (also available in a one pack).

    5. The One Line A Day journal: each page asks you to record a little about that calendar date over the course of five years, so as you flip through each year again, you get to reflect on what's changed — or hasn't!

    Amazon / Via

Get one on Amazon Canada for $21.81.

    6. A small handheld steamer that'll get rid of the wrinkles in your clothing in no time, and without the hassle of pulling out the ironing board. You don't even have to take your clothes off the hanger! This will save you plenty of prep time for years to come.

    Kat Angus/BuzzFeed

I hate ironing, which means that for a long time, if I had something that was wrinkled, either I wore it wrinkled or I never wore it again. But this steamer lets me smooth out all those fabric wrinkles within a few minutes, and dare I say it's almost fun to use it? Because it is. Now I don't have to dread the big production of ironing all my wrinkly stuff and just pull out this baby instead. It heats up in 30 seconds and can run for 15 minutes of steaming — plenty of time to rescue all my wrinkled clothing.

Get it from Amazon Canada for $40.97.

    7. A few pairs of hiker-favorite merino wool socks that stay in place no matter what your day brings, wick moisture away from your skin, resist odour, and best of all, last for miles and miles without any holes.

    @darntoughvermont / Via

Oh, and the company has an unconditional lifetime guarantee, so if/when they do wear through, you can get a new pair, no problem.

Get them on Amazon Canada for $29+ (available in sizes small–large and 11 colours/patterns).

    8. A non-slip rubber jar opener so you can effortlessly open the stubbornest of lids with just a simple twist – both now and literally decades from now.

    Amazon / Via

Get one on Amazon Canada for $14.07, or 12 for $31.08.

    9. A pack of six wool dryer balls that are good for at *least* 1,000 loads: that means you could use them in one load every single day for over two and a half years without wearing them out.

    Amazon / Via

And you're definitely not doing laundry THAT often. These also replace SO many dryer sheets *and* help your clothes dry faster! (Some reviewers do note extra static — to avoid, lower your temp so you don't end up over-drying.)

Get the pack of six on Amazon Canada for $19.99.

    10. A small-but-mighty cat brush that'll capture loose fur and help detangle any matted fur — and your cat will love the attention, day after day after day.

    Amazon / Via, Kat Angus/BuzzFeed

I love my cat Moe more than I care for most people, but I don't particularly love how much he sheds on everything. I'd tried out the grooming glove on him, but for whatever reason, he didn't like how it felt and went running whenever I took it out of the drawer. But he loves the feeling of this brush! And hoo-boy, does this thing collect fur. It gathers up all the loose fur that he was surely about to shed on my clothes and furniture. Plus, the brush comes with a release button, making removing the fur from it a lot easier. I've already noticed a difference in Moe's coat, plus there's a lot less fur lying around the house.

Get it from Amazon Canada for $43.19 (available for long-haired and short-haired cats, and for small and large cats. Also available in a version for dogs).

    11. A cookbook packed with all kinds of delicious, simple recipes that you'll reach for time and again to figure out what, exactly, you want to make for dinner.

    Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Get them on Amazon Canada: the completely revised 20th-century edition (with full-colour pictures) for $37.42 or the vegetarian edition for $42.87.

    12. A silicone zip-top sandwich bag that can replace hundreds — if not thousands — of the single-use ones without sacrificing any of the useful function that those old-school ones offered.

    Amazon / Via

I LOVE these. I've been using the same two for almost four years now, and tossing them in the top rack of the dishwasher for the past two years: they still look perfectly brand new AND they've pretty much completely replaced disposable plastic bags in my life.

Get one on Amazon Canada for $11.99+ (available in six colours/styles).

    13. A classic Jansport backpack — they're ultra-durable, come with a lifetime warranty, and these days you can get them in all kinds of colors and patterns.

    Amazon / Via

Yes, even after years of wear and tear, you can get it fixed or replaced for free, and continue carrying it for many more years to come.

Get them on Amazon Canada for $26.18+ (available in many different colours/patterns).

    14. A countertop hydroponic garden kit that will make it unbelievably easy to grow fresh herbs, salad greens, and cherry tomatoes through every season, even the next six winters.

    Amazon / Via

Growing tons of fresh greens with this thing takes basically zero effort: you fill the tank with water, insert the little pods, set the light to shine at the same time every day, and watch 'em grow! My co-worker Yi tested and reviewed it if you want even more details.

Get it from Amazon Canada for $129.99 (available in three colours).

    15. A spinning makeup brush cleaner that'll quickly swirl your dirty brushes in soapy water, then spin them completely dry within 30 seconds. Your skin doesn't appreciate dirty, germy brushes, so now you have no excuse not to wash them! And they'll last a lot longer too.

    Kat Angus/BuzzFeed

I'm know I'm not alone in not washing my makeup brushes as often as I should. It takes forever, and even once I'm done cleaning them, I still have to let them dry overnight. But this spinning makeup brush cleaner has totally changed the game. It uses a battery-operated spinner to swish the dirty brush in soapy water (I just used liquid soap, but you can also use special makeup brush shampoo), and then you just lift the brush out of the water and keep it spining for a few seconds — voilà! Within 30 seconds, the brush is totally clean and — more importantly — totally dry.

The spinner works with almost any size of makeup brush (it comes with several sizes of holders, so you can use whichever one fits best), though I will say that if you have any double-ended makeup brushes, they probably won't work with this system. That being said, with this spinning cleaner, I cleaned and dried all of my makeup brushes in under ten minutes. Now I'll actually clean them on the regular.

Get it from Amazon Canada for $27.98. You'll also need some AAA batteries — get a 12-pack from Amazon Canada for $16.64.

    16. A refillable Brita water pitcher perfect if your fridge doesn't have a dispenser in the door — besides reducing your water's mercury, copper, and chorine content, it'll also make the stuff from the tap taste soooo much better.

    Amazon / Via

Meaning you can switch to reusable water bottles, too. One of my former roommates has owned his Brita pitcher for nearly nine years now and it's still going strong. All you have to do is replace the filters every few months — you can grab some here.

Get it on Amazon Canada for $22.75+ (available in two colours).

    17. A compact umbrella designed to withstand winds up to 70 miles per hour, repel rain, and open and close at the touch of a button. You'll face so many storms together that by the time this umbrella retires, it'll feel like a good friend.

    Totes / Amazon / Via

Well, as much as any product can feel like a friend. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Get it on Amazon Canada for $33.67+ (available in three colours/patterns).

    18. A wine-saver that will keep all your opened bottles fresh for an extra day or two — and up to a full week — so you get to enjoy every last drop of every single bottle you buy, now until eternity.

    Amazon / Via

It literally creates a vacuum seal: you wet the rubber cork, stick it in, then use the pump to suck out all the air remaining in the bottle. When it makes a *click* sound, you know you're done! I've owned one of these for nine years now, and my parents have had one they've used regularly since the early nineties. Just think of how many glasses of wine just those two have saved!

Get the starter set (which includes the pump plus one stopper) on Amazon Canada for $29.78+ (available in two colours).

    19. A classic Stanley vacuum bottle you truly can count on to keep your coffee (or tea or soup) hot for hours, both tomorrow morning and a morning thousands of tomorrows from now.

    Amazon / Via

You can always get replacement parts, but the lifetime warranty's what makes this really worth it!

Get a 1.1-quart bottle from Amazon Canada for $25.35+ (also available in a two-quart size).

    20. And lastly, a Kindle Paperwhite, which will hold thousands of books on it, and the screen looks just like paper — i.e. no glare when you read it in the sun! And did I mention it's waterproof? Take this baby in the bath or by the pool and get your read on.

    Kat Angus/ BuzzFeed

I got the Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas and it's the best gift I've received in years. It's so easy to read (you can change the font and the font size, plus there's a dark mode for when you're reading in low light), and I love that I can switch between books so easily. I also recommend this fabric cover for it — it's a bit pricier than other Kindle covers, but the fabric is waterproof, and it's got a magnet that'll hold the cover open while you read. If you're a bookworm like I am, this is life saver.

Get it from Amazon Canada for $139.99+ (available in 8GB and 32GB storage sizes).
